Norton Virus Protection is not a firewall. I have not tried the cox
firewall but I use, and have installed on other peoples computers the free
Zonealarm and find it works really well.
It will alert you when someone tries to gain access to your pc or try to
load a program and ask you to deny or ok the request.

Thanx for all the advice - I'm doing what I usually do, procrastinating about making a final decision!!!!! But I think I have enough information now - and I think I understand some of this a little bit better.
One question - I read somewhere that Windows XP has a built-in firewall. Is that true - and if so, is that enough protection?

My understanding is that XP service pack 2 has a fire wall, but I had to
unstall service pack 2. A lot of software is incompatible with it, and
I found it hard to set up.
I use Norton antivirus, along with Spyware blaster, a free program that
prevents spyware from installing itself on your computer. Antivirus
programs don't protect against spyware.

scan for malicious software, along with having Norton Antivirus on my
computer.

You probably have installed XP Service Pack 2. If so, you will
probably have to turn it off if you run another firewall.
I have heard so many horror stories about SP2 that I have been
holding off installing it. I agree with Sharon, you definitely need
anti spyware/adware software. I run mine once a day if I have been
doing a lot of surfing on the net. My system was "hijacked" by
spyware a few months ago and believe me folks you dont want that to
happen to you. It was a huge mess to get everything running properly
again.

Yes, there is a perfectly decent firewall program with XP and SP2.
However, I prefer the Norton Suite. Yes, you do need to disable the
firewall in XP/SP2, you do not want two firewall programs running at
the same time. Same for anti-virus, only one run at a time. It is
not unusual, for example, when running two for one to recognize
actions by the other anti-virus program as a virus!
Ad-aware by Lavasoft is another free spy ware program that gets high
marks.
No anti-virus program of spy ware program is any good unless you
periodically update it and run a full system scan on a regular basis.

Thanks for all of the advice. On Thunderbird, do you know if is it
easy to set up multiple e-mail accounts on there? We are using
Outlook Express now and have several "identities" - although there is
a bug (part of the XP SP1) that causes it to lock up often when
changing identities.

We have 4 separate identities on one computer, each one with a different E-mail address through Earthlink. What we did was open each identity separately and download Thunderbird. There are easy to follow instructions. It just asked what browser we use and if we wanted to import. We followed the same procedure for each identity. The switch was really easy.

I can tell you that it fixed for me a couple of problems that I had with Explorer. We could never get the spell checker to work on this computer for some reason, despite a lot of trying and frustration; and also for some reason the Hyperlinks recently stopped working, and we couldn't fix that either. I told you that I am not technical 
Thunderbird worked great right from the start. I just forgot to run the spell checker for my last E-mail -- I cringed when I saw the typos the next day.
