XVP: converting cash

Can anyone tell me what a regular LV bank charges for changing foreign money to US dollars? I am trying to decide whether to exchange money before I leave or do it in Vegas.

  Thanks for any help!

Generally speaking you would be better off doing it at home. If you don't have to pay a service
charge for travellers cheques at your bank then that would give you a better exchange rate than
getting cash. If you are into serious amounts of money then you would be much further ahead
getting a line of credit with the casino that you play at.

With a line of credit you would only have to pay the exchange rate on your actual net losses.
If you go to Las Vegas often you should see if you can obtain a US dollar account in the UK, that
would be a good way to avoid getting ripped off exchanging money back and forth.

Any casino will exchange foreign currency. The most important thing is
to have at least $30 US dollars at the airport. That way you'll have
at least money for a taxi or a shuttle. Since you'll be flying into
Terminal 2, the exchange booths are not always operating and they give
a lousy return on the exchange rate.

Now you don't mention what kind of foreign currency you have. ?? Also
you mention about exchange at LV banks not the casinos. I recently had
some Swedish Kroner, and I had some trouble converting it. My banks
were just not interested at all in converting the currency. Other
banks had huge fees, and I am sure someone just walking off the street
with foreign currency would not get very far.

I did find some casinos (not all) that would convert Canadian $$,
Pesos, and Euros. If you have something other than that, you will have
to do some checking around.

My advise--- convert it before you come.

I had some CAD's to convert a few months ago and, on the advice of
another VPF member, called various casinos to inquire about their
exchange rate. Simply dial the main number and ask for the cage.
Assuming you have relatively common foreign currency you should have
no problem getting it exchanged. Getting a favorable rate is a
different story... FWIW, I found the Cal Neva in Reno offered the
best rate on the CAD. As others have suggested, you might be better
off exchanging before you leave for LV.
