XVP Computer help

I have two old desktop computers that I am planning to donate to charity.
Is there an easy way to eliminate ALL personal data from the hard drive without destroying the operating system?

Also, when I boot up my new Dell laptop, it looks for a wireless connection. Does this mean that I am "wireless ready", or must I but an accessory to log on to the internet at a location where wireless is "in the air"?

Here's an article from PCWorld...

Elliott,

In the article it mentioned the option of just deleting files. I would
suggest that you use the complete erase option. It's just too easy to
miss important information. If you want to give the system away with an
operating system, reinstall windows after erasing the entire disk.

I think probably all new laptops have this feature now, Elliott. I
have a 2 year old HP laptop that is wireless ready. You are good to
go with wireless, nothing else needed. It works great for me as
hotels nationwide are now putting in wireless internet for competitive
reasons. I only stay at hotels that have it. Libraries are doing the
same thing, with electrical plug-ins too. Of course coffee shops are
a good spot also. Good luck.

The PC World link is a good source. This is another option.
The Kim Komando web site is useful for many reasons. Her business
is located in Phoenix, but she has a weekly computer radio show
that you can receive in most states.

"Kim, I wanted to get rid of an old computer. By using your new book,
I cleaned everything off the hard drive so no one can ever recover my
old personal information!" -- Marsha in San Antonio

Get easy, important step-by-step info on how to:
-- Secure your wireless network
-- Find what's posted about you and loved ones online
-- Keep thieves from secretly tracking your keystrokes & what you do
-- Erase data for good before giving away an old computer
-- Limit access to your computer from family, workers and friends
-- Use a PDA securely, & protect files on a USB drive
-- And so much, much more you need to know and use!

==> Order now, while you're thinking of it! My books are not in
stores:
