Unlike in Europe where operators realized about 25 ago that
interoperability was very important, in the US carriers have
ignored the issue
Europe is still I believe regulated. Most of their governments are social
democracies so they favor regulation on consumer issues such as drugs, medical
care, transportation, etc. This country has done a real about face on
regulating. Everything from air, phone, attempts at energy in California for
example---have been deregulated. Transportation was always well regulated for our
safety--but now trucks from Mexico go running through our country without the same
cost of licensing, and standards--note recently the sale of our ports to the
arabs. If we continue this way I doubt carriers will find profit a sufficient
driver to having interoperability.
