XVP: cell phones in casinos

i was wondering if we could get responses from cell phone users, especially
in las vegas and atlantic city, regarding the ability to use your phone
inside a casino, and who your carrier is. i have verizon, and can hardly use it
anywhere, bellagio being the exception. i have asked people in taj in
atlantic city, where i have to walk out to the boardwalk, and they say their sprint
and tmobile work there (but not nextel?). maybe we can reach some informal
polling consensus on which company seems to provide the best service within
casinos, or maybe it's just hit and miss (i hope not). any and all feedback
would be appreciated. thanks.

-You need to be aware that many/most/all casinos use cell phone
jammers close to the sports book. Move away from those and you'll
probably get better reception.

-I don't want to get into deep technical details, but there's more to
the issue than just knowing which carrier you're using. The exact
location matters, and the detailed capabilities of the phone do as
well.

-Even with everything looking as equal as possible, there are
differences between the quality of individual phones. My wife has a
Motorola phone, I have a Sony-Ericsson one, both unlocked tri-band GSM
imported from overseas (i.e. no support for 850MHz GSM), both on
Cingular go-phone plans that were activated at the same time; I can
often get reception in places where my wife can't, and casinos aren't
an exception. In all Reno casinos where I've tried to use my phone,
I've always had to be away from the sports book, that's the only
really consistent aspect.

Cell-phone jammers are illegal in the United States so I am surprised that
casinos use them. Do they have some kind of Federal exemption?

When I moved to Vegas, I had AT&T. They were useless for the area I
lived in (Anthem/Seven Hills). When my contract expired I got
T-Mobile. They were better but still didn't get good service. I went
to their store and bought the most expensive phone they had, ending up
returning it cuz it didn't help enough. I switched to Verizon and
they've been the best so far. There's still areas that I drop calls,
including my home. Much of the problem has to do with placement of
cell phone towers in the community. Everyone wants service but they
don't want towers in their neighborhood. If you look closely, that
Palm Tree might be a cell phone tower in disguise.

I have T-mobil now. Previously I had Sprint. Occasionally, I have
to move to a door, but rarely do I need to exit the casino, in order
to use the cell phone and transmit and receive clearly.

I've used my phone in every casino in which I play, in downtown LV,
No. LV and Reno. My cell works well while sitting in front of a
machine and actually playing while carrying on a conversation.

Every time that I've been fortunate enough to score a royal, I've
called my husband to share the good news, while still sitting at the
lovely machine. He has never failed to hear the message loud and
clear! (-:

On any poll you would have to list the phone you have plus the service provider.
I have Nokia 6820, my provider is Cingular.
Have not had a problem in any of the Vegas casinos receiving or placing a call.

My experience has been mostly in Atlantic City.

We used to have the older type AT&T phone system and it didn't work at all in the casinos. About a year ago we upgraded to GSM phones from Cingular and it almost always works. It depends a lot on where we are in the casino, but it works pretty well at Showboat, Harrahs, and Borgata. My wife and I have different phones (mine is a Nokia and my wife's is an LG) and sometimes mine works better than hers and other times it is the other way around.

I also have Cingular, and the only casino I cannot place or receive a
call is the Suncoast.

I have Verizon. I rarely go to the Strip but only have problems in a
few areas of a few casinos. It almost always gets a signal no matter
where I am in LV.

Jammers are very illegal in the US. The FCC doesn't take kindly to
people messing with regulated air waves. If you can't get a signal,
it is probably the construction of the building. Various materials
can block signals just as good as a jammer. Besides I have seen
several people at the LVH get yelled at for using a cell phone in the
sports book.

A recent report in Consumers Reports ranked all the cell phone providers in the country. They surveyed around 30 cities, Las Vegas was not included.
Verizon was number1 almost everywhere T-mobile was a close second and it wasn't close after that.
I used to have Cingular service, it sucked. I switched to t-mobile and have been pleased with the service and the reception .
