XVP: Caveat emptor. Enterprise and the consolidated rental facility...

An excerpt from my recent LV trip report on Enterprise and the
consolidated rental facility. This was too good not to share with
everyone.

···

-------------

Upon arrival to LAS, we made our way to the queue for the new
McCarran consolidated shuttle service. I anticipated a cluster and
the airport authority they did not disappoint. We waited EIGHT
minutes for a shuttle (so much for the three minute quote..ya, I'm
guilty of being spoiled by the prompt service in the past) to
appear. By that time the queue was nearly one hundred deep. Oh, how
I enjoy sucking diesel fumes in 90 degree heat. Imagine what this
experience will be like when it's a buck-fifteen in the middle of
August. After the 39 mile drive to the consolidated facility (ok, it
was probably only 6 or 7), we arrived ten minutes later (oh how I
yearn for the three minute ride to Dollar). For those counting,
we're at nearly 20 minutes and we haven't even hit the car rental
counter.

I made two car rental reservations this trip; one with Enterprise and
one with Alamo. The Enterprise reservation for the five days was
only $68 (with all taxes/fees) but I knew I should have a backup plan
since Enterprise is known for the hard sell and not so prompt
service. The Alamo res was for $111 but included triple SWA Rapid
Reward credit (1.5 credits worth $33 to me). I figured the $10
savings at Enterprise might be worth the anticipated hassle if there
was no line at their counter. Upon arrival, there were only two
guests in line so we went for it. The agent efficiently processed my
paperwork after I declined the upgrade offer then abruptly
stated, "No additional coverages, no additional drivers and return
full." The agent gave me a snarl since she wasn't going to get a
commission then directed us to the garage where we walked what felt
like nearly a quarter mile. Upon arrival to the Enterprise area
there was not a single car in the lot. The agent offered an SUV or
minivan, which I promptly declined (I rented an economy to save on
fuel expense) and AGAIN tried the hard sell on insurance and fuel
option. Bad choice on passing on the upgrade. It took nearly 10
minutes for them to bring an economy class up. After noting the 27
dings and scratches (no, I'm not exaggerating), we were on our way…
only 42 minutes after we initially arrived at the line for the rental
shuttle. Yes, that's correct. FORTY TWO minutes to get in our car.
I put the fault equally on Enterprise and the airport authority for
this extremely inefficient service.

We were assigned a Chevy Aveo (which I believe means hunk of sh*t in
Spanish) and exited the facility only to end up so far down LV Blvd
that I thought we were on the outskirts of Jean, NV. North on the
Strip and I decided to make our first stop Hooters to play the
CPlayer coupons. During the drive, I notice the gas gauge is just
baaaarely on the "F" line. Great, they screwed me out of at least
two gallons of gas. Once there, we hop out and I try to lock the
door (of course there was no keyless remote option on this junk
vehicle). I manually try to push the lock down and it doesn't
budge. I push harder – no luck. I briefly consider getting my
rollaround to attempt to force the lock down but eventually rule that
out. I finally try using the key to lock from the outside and that
works. Manually locking the car for the next four days? Uh-uh, I
don't think so.

After exiting Hooters, I get on the horn to Enterprise during our
drive to the next coupon stop. Not surprising, it's voicemail hell
on the number listed so I then call the "If you're not satisfied
please call our General Manager at…." I call that number and, you
guessed it, voicemail hell again. I call the airport location again
and work my way through 49 prompts and finally get a human on the
phone. I explain the issue to the rep and she says, "No problem sir,
just return it the airport and we'll exchange it for you." I explain
that I'm not driving the 82 miles back to the airport and going
through the 20 minute saga there. I tell her to find me an economy
car near mid Strip and I'll do the swap there. She asks me to
hold….and I hold….and hold….and hold. By this time we've driven from
Hooters to the LVHilton so you can do the math on the total amount of
time given the traffic/construction on Paradise (that I wasn't aware
of) and sat through while holding. I give up and decide to take this
issue up upon return home.

The return to the facility was almost as much fun as our arrival. I
pull into the facility where we arrive at the Enterprise return area
and wait….and wait….and wait. After six minutes someone finally
shows up and asks six of us waiting "Who was first?" I note the
issues with the car and the clerk offers to take $10 off. I take the
$10 and decide another call to Enterprise will follow after arriving
home. Two gallons of gas short, broken locks and nearly worn out car
for $10 off? Uh, no.

Once back in the facility we make our way to the queue for the
shuttle back to McCarran where we I observe it's about 70 deep…on a
Saturday afternoon. Why am I not surprised? 20 minutes later we're
finally dropped at the terminal…at the complete opposite end of
Southwest check-in. I don't know what I love more – the consolidated
facility or Enterprise.

Viva Las Vegas.

Let's see, waiting 8 minutes for the shuttle is too long. You got a
car for $13 a day. Had to drive an extra 2 miles once out of the
rental car facility.

I'm sure gald you didn't have to wait for a taxi or we might have to
hear you complain how long THAT took. Priceless!

(1) I used the American Casino Guide ID# to book an "Economy" Class
reservation with Alamo.

(2) When I exited baggage claim, there were FIVE buses waiting for ME.

(3) I had checked in with Alamo online the day before my trip. That
made it unnecessary to stop at the counter. I went directly to the
garage.

(4) There were no Economy (or Compact, or Midsize) cars in Alamo's
section of the ramp, so I was offered a triple upgrade to Fullsize,
which I accepted at the Economy rate. Mileage be damned; my car spends
most of its time in parking ramps waiting for me.

(5) Two weeks later, returning the car was no hassle. I then waited
about three minutes for the bus that ferried five of us to the McCarren
check in cluster that includes United Airlines.

(6) I'm going back in June for three weeks of the World Series of
Poker. Having now given this favorable report, I'll get be prepared to
get the short end of the the "hockeystl" stick then.

Hmmm. 2 miles more? You might want to check your mileage. And what
does the price paid have to do with service levels? I was flying on a
$50 DING! fare so I guess they shouldn't have served me a beverage, eh?

The new consolidated facility WILL add time to EVERY rental due to A)
Distance to new facility and B)Longer walks to the vehicles, even if
you're an "Express" member of a program. At a minimum, this will now
add 15 minutes to the process of renting/returning. Fifteen minutes
might not mean much to you but when that comes at the expense of a
$200/hr play it means something to me...

Thanks for reinforcing one of my reasons why I no longer publicly post
my trip reports.

Of course you're right, lets look at it another way.

Annual passenger traffic at McCarren in 06 was 46.2 million folks
(according to Clark County Public Communications
http://tinyurl.com/29vtrq).

If we assume:

There are 1,800,000 rental car contracts a year in Las Vegas (LVRJ
http://tinyurl.com/2mav3o)

Whatever number you want to assume is a great assumption, and may be
substituted, that's why it's called an assumption.

That comes to 205 years of productivity lost - solid 365 day, 24 hour
days that the bureaucrats - negotiating with themselves, have burdened
us with, instead of letting the free market determine whats best.

Thanks for reinforcing one of my reasons why I no longer publicly post
my trip reports.

That is VERY sad, your posts always contained great information. We all lose.

Just my 2 cents: Our experience in mid-April with the new car rental
facility was quite different. I was all set to have a bad experience
but to our shock and surprise everything went very smoothly. We
arrived at the LAS shuttle line around 3:00PM on a Thursday to find
bus after bus available, so no wait there. I belong to all the quick
pick-up clubs (Hertz Gold, National Emerald Aisle, Alamo QuickSilver,
etc.), so we always by-pass the counter - that saves lots of time.
This trip we rented from National, and they have a separate exit booth
for their Emerald Aisle customers - another time-saver. At return,
there was a looooong line, but -again- plenty of buses waiting to take
the passengers back to LAS so it was not an issue. One thing I will be
prepared for next time: when exiting the garage when picking up the
car, I hope to be better prepared to avoid Las Vegas Boulevard. That
was a real mess. I'll have to study Google maps and figure out a
better exit strategy.

I learned about the third option in April while conversing with South

hoping that things would pick up when the new interchange opened later
that week. Only the NORTHbound ENTRANCE ramp opened while I was there
in mid-April. The other ramps probably have opened by now.

Very useful post. Those arriving in LV should know that there is
construction on LV Blvd just north of where the new consolidated
facility dumps out onto the Strip.

If anyone has the name of the back door surface street, and the best

Granted you didn't say ruined your trip, but is sure sounded like
it's what you meant.

Perhaps looking at the bigger picture, there was a reason why it is
like it is. McCarran needs to expand with additional gates and
terminal 3. Land is at a premium so moving the rental car facility
was a necessity. When terminal 3 opens, hopefully Southwest and/or
America West-US Air will move there as well alleviating the problems
with the limited amount of carousels for baggage. If speed was your
concern, then why fly Southwest with D gates. Everyone knows that it
takes at least 10-15 minutes of additional time to get from your
gate, walk to the tram and get to the baggage carrousel. But I'm
sure you had carry-on luggage to speed the process. Perhaps next
time take flights arriving at A or B gates will cut down a few
minutes. Taht's my words of wisdom for today.

2 years ago, I outed a play at the Rainbow Club in Henderson about $1
FPDW and I was chastised for it but many on the board. After that
point in time, I really limited my posts regarding decent plays in
town. I found another play last year with $1 FPDW with cash and
comps as well, but didn't announce it. Read some of my posts. The
one about the Riviera comes to mind.

I think that we are all a bit more "thoughtful" here about speaking of anything that might
"bring on the hordes", thinking (I think, correctly) that it might "break" a nice play.

I am even a bit paranoid about mentioning almost anything that a "suit" might react to.

REPLY TO HOCKEYSTL and LYNN: I just now dug out the brochure that I
picked up inside the rental car facility. This isn't the route that I
took, but the brochure's map shows that, after exiting onto Gillespie
from the east side of the facility's parking ramp, you should go north
on Gillespie to George Crockett, then east on George Crockett to an
entrance ramp for the "Airport Connector." I don't think that you
actually get onto I-215 when travelling that route. The entrance ramp
for the connector appears to either over or under I-215.

When I was exploring at random, I think that I must have gone SOUTH on
Gillespie to Warm Springs, then east on Warm Springs to either Paradise
or another entrance ramp for the Airport Connector. That worked, too,
but the brochure's route described above looks shorter.

SUPPLEMENTAL REPLY: For returning cars, the brochure advises taking LV
Blvd to George Crockett (east) to Gillespie (south). When I was there
in April, the construction on LV Blvd clogged the turn from LV Blvd
onto George Crockett. Until that changes, I'd advise taking I-15
(south) to the Blue Diamond exit (east)[near the LV Outlet Mall], to LV
Blvd (north), to Warm Springs (east), to Gillespie (north). That gets
you around the contruction at LV Blvd and George Crockett.

Alternatively, using only surface streets, you could take Paradise or
the Airport Connector (south) to Warm Springs (west), to Gillespie
(north).
