XVP Catching 7 on dice roll?

Hi all

It's a day off and I'll spend afternoon getting a stomach scope and a
CAT scan. While waiting till time to leave for hospital, I watched
the Cheers postman tour the monopoly plant in a show called Made In
America. Better way to use a 1/2 hr than watching reruns of Brady
Bunch. Anyway, a monopoly rep at the plant said the #7 comes up most
often in dice rolls. I didn't know that. I guess a regular craps
player would know? Then I wondered, wouldn't there be two numbers
come up equally. I would guess snake eyes and box cars (or whatever
the players call them) should come up the same? Thinking along this
line, wouldn't 5 come up as often as 7? Or is 7 the most often
rolled?

Cheers....Jeep

Jeeps,

With 2 dice, there are 36 possible results. If you write them out, you will
be able to see that the values 2-12 are generated the following number of
times each:

2 (1-1) --> 1 combination
3 (1-2, 2-1) --> 2 combinations
4 (1-3, 2-2, 3-1) --> 3 combinations
5 (1-4, 2-3, 3-2, 4-1) --> 4 combinations
6 (1-5, 2-4, 3-3, 4-2, 5-1) --> 5 combinations
7 (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 6-1) --> 6 combinations
8 (2-6, 3-5, 4-4, 5-3, 6-2) --> 5 combinations
9 (3-6, 4-5, 5-4, 6-3) --> 4 combinations
10 (4-6, 5-5, 6-4) --> 3 combinations
11 (5-6, 6-5) --> 2 combinations
12 (6-6) --> 1 combination

As you can see, your general thinking was correct. But you linked things
incorrectly. 2 and 12 are linked; as are 3/11, 4/10, 5/9, and 6/8. Since
there are 11 possible "sums" with 2 6-sided dice, one of the values has to
be unpaired. This is 7.

Hopefully that helps clear up your confusion.

For two regular dice, there are 36 combinations.

7 comes up 6 ways.
8 comes up 5 ways. 6 also comes up 5 ways.
9 comes up 4 ways. 5 also comes up 4 ways.
10 comes up 3 ways. 4 also comes up 3 ways.
11 comes up 2 ways. 3 also comes up 2 ways.
12 comes up 1 way. 2 also comes up 1 way.

There are your 36 combinations.

The amount of numbers on a pair of dice that will add up to 7 is higher than any other number. Hence, the reason why 7 is rolled most often.

  --Brett

The reason that seven is rolled more than any other number is because there
are more ways that a seven can be made than any other number. No, five does
not come up as often as seven.

There are 6 ways to roll a seven: 1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1

There are 5 ways to roll six: 1+5, 2+4, 3+3, 4+2, 5+1

There are 5 ways to roll eight: 2+6, 3+5, 4+4, 5+3, 6+2

There are 4 ways to roll five: 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1

There are 4 ways to roll nine: 3+6, 4+5, 5+4, 6+3

There are 3 ways to roll four: 1+3, 2+2, 3+1

There are 3 ways to roll ten: 4+6, 5+5, 6+4

There are 2 ways to roll three: 1+2, 2+1

There are 2 ways to roll eleven: 5+6, 6+5

There is 1 way to roll snake eyes: 1+1

There is 1 way to roll box cars: 6+6

Hey folks

Thanks for clearing that up. I was a little worried the dice might not
be random. I would have had to have my lawyers, Dewey, Cheetam and
Howe, file suit for all those games of monopoly I have lost over the
years. Oh.... the mental anguish; followed by pain and suffering!
The lawyers dream; file suit on a company with deep pockets. In fact,
Monopoly folks yearly print more $$ than many small contries.
