I have been in many casinos in various European cities, as well as
casinos on other continents. I have never found a casino overseas,
that did not charge at least a modest entrance fee. I believe the
least expensive was approximately $5.00.
The second casino you mentioned in Monte Carlo used to be Bally's (I was
there soon after it opened in the 70's) and there was at that time no entrance
charged. We had the most amazing thing happen there that has ever happened to
me before or since at a casino.
We were playing Blackjack with a cute French dealer. The pit bosses were
all around another table where some sheik or other was playing a full table
using big purple chunks of plastic as his currency - who knows how many
thousands of franc each represented. And I don't know if at the time they had an eye
in the sky. At any rate no pit personnel were anywhere near our table.
At some point my friend was dealt A-5 and I was dealt K-6. I smiled at the
dealer and exchanged cards so she had a BJ and I had eleven for a double
down. He grinned and paid her and hit my hand. Then for the rest of his shift,
he dealt to us, stopping when we would go over (moving the card along to the
next player who could take it without busting) and hitting his own hand until
he busted. He smiled and laughed with us ( i was chatting him up in French)
and we tipped him and didn't raise our bets. Everyone seemed to know this
was a once-in-a-lifetime event and no one did anything to break the spell
until his relief came. Then I left with my friends.
