We are going to pick up a car in San Francisco on Oct. 1st, drive it to
Reno, and leave it in Las Vegas the 14th. We had no idea the drop charges
were going to be $350!!! Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to avoid
these charges?

Take a bus from SF to Reno, then Reno to Vegas. Rent a car in Vegas.
Normally I would tell you to wait till Sept to order car, but Oct. is

Try avoiding the car entirely, no drop charges, fees on fees etc.-Amtrak has bus-train service Reno to San Francisco and San Francisco to Vegas (bus Vegas -Bakersfield, train Bakersfield Bay Area) with a powerful frequent traveler program and use the excellent city bus service in Reno, San Francisco, and Las Vegas

Thanks for the advice, but this time we wanted to stop through Yosemite for a couple of nights and then drive through Death Valley on the way down to Vegas, so we definitely will need a car! It will be a 2 week driving trip for our 20th anniversary.
