My average car rental is $13/day + tax = $20/day.
Las Vegas car rental 2/20-2/24 Fox $84 ($16/day + tax), Ace $108 ($17+), Thrifty $115 ($17.42+) without searching for rental discount codes.
1) I refare my reservations every week (e.g. if the price drops, lock it in).
2) Even though I usually rent Thrifty (to get free rental days), I check Orbitz just to see if anyone has crazy low rates.
3) If the rates are really high, I check hotwire.com & priceline.com (BiddingForTravel & BetterBidding).
4) I search for rental discount codes on FlyerTalk.com and Google.
5) It's ok to hold multiple reservations at Fox, Ace, and Thrifty because no-shows don't charge you (Double-check current rules). If one drops *really* low, you might cancel the other ones, but who's to say that Ace won't drop to $50 the day before your trip because they have a glut of cars.
6) The day before a reservation the price often either drops to $13/day (too many cars) or jumps to $80-100/day (oversold).

After hearing some mention Advantage Rent a Car, I took a look at their rates for my next trip. For 2/20/10, pick up at noon and drop off 2/24/10 at noon, the rate at the airport with all taxes is $105.04.
