Call the front desk and tell them you left in a hurry and ask them to check you out.

Going to LV next week. Have 2 great offers and booked rooms at 2 different
hotels for the same night. We will be staying at hotel A for the first night of
a 2 night offer. We will pick up our promo and move in the morning, even
though the next night is part of the offer, as we prefer Hotel B. Does anyone
have any tips for "checking out" as we will not be staying at both?
Thanks
Christy

I rarely actually check out of hotels in any city unless I use video
checkout. The hotel will automatically check you out when the maid shows up
and there is nothing left in the room. Never had a problem doing this, so
far.

Make sure there are "no" charges to the room. Leave the room looking like you stayed in it ( for example open up the covers , lie down for 10 seconds, wash your hands, etc.) Leave the key in the room with a tip. If ever asked ( and I have never been ) your excuse is " I tried the video checkout, but it was not working - so I just left the keys in the room".
Another way is , just drop the keys with a partially filled in "checkout slip" in the express checkout box most hotels have.
I recently got an offer for "$300" in free play and 3 nights. I booked the room for only 1 night ( still got the $300) but stayed somewhere else ( important note: make sure the 2 properties are not related !). I checked in at 5PM, got the free play and played till about 8PM ( about 50% of my normal action ). No charges, no comps, no greeting hosts - but quickly and stealthily returned to my main hotel. and I have done this maneuver at least 3 times last year with 0 repercussions.

Oh my goodness. You guys are WAY too worried about this. If you just leave
the hotel, they'll check you out. I've done it hundreds of times.

If you don't want to be checked out of an empty room, a note on the bed
usually works. Sometimes they don't read English though.

If you do this (I do it fiarly often), don't forget to remove the Do Not Disturb sign. If the housekeeper doesn't come in, you are not checked out.

<<Do you know of anyone who has been audited by the IRS
who included gambling related 1099's with their gambling
winnings? If so, what was the outcome?>>

Someone wrote about their experience: <<I file as a professional gambler
and ALL winnings are totaled and

reported on Schedule C. 1099_Misc's and W-2G's were treated
identically. I was audited and given a clean bill of health.>>

I asked Marissa to clarify this question about combining your 1099s and
W2Gs. She emphasized, as I did, that the 1099s must be the result of
gambling or an activity with the expectation that you would be gambling -
like earning tickets for a casino drawing by gambling - or an invitational
tournament win where your invitation was a result of previous gambling or
the expectation of gambling during the tournament.

This would not be a gray area - filling out a form in a grocery store and no
purchase was necessary and winning a drawing that generated a 1099. Or,
winning on a game show. Those are clearly non-gambling prizes.

Marissa said that most tax employees in the Utah tax district (which Las
Vegas is in) are more knowledgeable about gaming issues than in other
districts in the U.S. She said that the Utah district, for the last few
years, haven't even been giving letter audits to people who added 1099s and
W2Gs together, even if they didn't add a note to their return with a
detailed list of
each one. However, it is always safe to include this list.

<<Does it make any difference if someone files as a
'professional gambler' (Sched. C) or not?>>

No, but, again, I would add to my return a list with a note indicating that
these were all gambling related.
