XVP; Alamo update

This is an update from my rental car mishap in Las Vegas. I had hit
something in the road which put a hole in the radiator 4 days into my 6
day rental.

I finally got the receipt from Alamo for my rental , 6/28 - 7/4. I had
the car towed on July 2 at 8 AM. I was charged for 4 days ( not the 6
days of the original contract) but I was charged a $15 early termination
fee. Also, I was charged for 7 gallons of gas at $5.99 a gallon. As
previously mentioned, I only drove about 90 miles. I checked the milage
on the contract and according to their records, I drove 4040 miles in
3.5 days. I guess they don't keep milage records very well.

Even funnier is the way they charge the fees and taxes. Each fee or tax
is a percentage of a different base amount. The 5.14% tax recoupment
fee is $7.80. The 6% Gov service fee is $6.37. Alamo must be a
division of Harrahs.

I still haven't heard from the claims office. I will call them today.
I will go back and read the contract again. It still doesn't seem right
that they don't provide a replacement vehicle if you decline CDW. I
also plan a letter to the Nevada attorney general on the gas deal.

I don't understand. It would seem that in either case the contract
terminates and you simply start a new contract on your own dime for
the balance of the rental.

Thanks for the info on your experience, I am going to Vegas next week and got a great rate from Dollar but will pay the extra $40 (for the week) for a car from Budget. I have rented from Budget in the past and always was treated well.

About 10 years ago my wife an I had our combined families (5 kids) in Orlando and waited 1 1/2 in the Alamo office in line to get our pre-reserved van. I will never rent from Alamo again.

My Alamo horror story took place a few years ago in Kona, Hawaii. I
had booked a car for 3 weeks through Priceline, and it turned out to
be Alamo.

When I went to pick up the car, they wanted to charge me $3/day to
have my wife as an "extra" driver. I'd never heard of an extra
charge for a spouse, but they said it was their standard practice.

I took the car WITHOUT adding my wife as a driver. When I got to
our rental, I called Alamo's 800# and said I wanted to rent a car
for 3 weeks in Kona, starting "today". When she gave me a price, I
asked if there was an extra charge for my wife driving, and she
said "of course not".

I don't remember whether I confronted the local office or the
national office with the contradiction (or, most likely, both). But
the conclusion was that they reserved the right to treat Priceline
customers differently. (and the Priceline form did not allow
specifying an "extra" driver when putting in a bid.)

It was the last time I ever used Priceline or Alamo. (I had already
stopped willfully using Alamo because of the ridiculous lines.)
