XVP AAdvantage Miles Worth?

Has anyone looked at the American Airlines advantage miles program and
determine the approximate value for one mile? They now have a credit card offer
where you can get 12,500 miles bonus for joining. It is a fee card with a $50
annual fee. If the miles are worth 1 cent would that be $125.00 value? Just got a
valentine offer from them for 15 miles for each dollar. Would that be about a
15% discount? If you used 2 cent per mile value then the saving would double.

YES, but only if these are "unrestricted" miles. Restricted miles are not worth as much since only a limited amount of seats are available with black out dates Enforced. I use America west's flight fund alot, and once got "shut out" of 6 straight "free flights" to Vegas. I ended up using "unrestricted miles" to book my flights so it cost me 50,000 miles instead of 25,000 for the long haul segments.

Like comps, I think value of miles can be variable to the individual and
how/if they will use them, but we have done mile offers like this and found
them worthwhile. We typically use our miles for upgrading to FC. 15,000
miles on AA gets you a one way upgrade and that $50 charge gets you most of
the way to that upgrade. We value an FC seat and it's worth well over $50
to us. I understand other people who use their miles for free flights have
had difficulty finding flights that qualify when using their miles, but
don't really know much about it. Their are other ways to earn AA miles.
Check the AA website for those that interest you. We regularly earn miles
at restaurants, car rentals, hotel stays and other services or products.

It is really unfortunate how the airlines hype their frequent flyer programs and then when you want to redeem an award they make it difficult. It seems that only Southwest and Amtrak do not limit the number of award seats these days.

Generally it takes 25,000 miles to get a free domestic flight on my
carrier. If that's the case with AA, where would you like to fly to
and how much does that cost? 1/2 that cost and you should be able
to value the miles.
