XP -- questions about living in Carson City/Reno

I have a job interview in Carson City next month and would like to hear perspectives from anybody who does or has lived there as to the quality of life...arts scene, cost of living, especially housing, traffic, anything that might be of use. I'll be moving from Alabama so I know it will be a big change :). (have also lived in Detroit and NJ).

Where are affordable places to live near Carson City? Is the commute manageable from Reno to CC?

Thanks in advance for your help, feel free to post to the board or pm me.

Can't help with your quality of life questions, but I have been
through Reno/Carson City several times on the way to Lake Tahoe.

The drive between the two is about 40 minutes. It's a mixture of new
multi-lane highway and older 4 lane, so speed and congestion vary up
and down. Last time I was there, they were doing a LOT of road work,
expanding the older portions, so their must be a lot of commuter
traffic between the two.

Hope that helps with at least one of your questions!

Check out south of Carson City in the area around Gardenerville & Genoa for small town atmosphere and horse country. A commute from south Reno to Carson City is do-able but would get tiring fast. A portion of the drive is 70 MPH but most has areas of speed limits and police that are very skilled at handing out tickets.

A commute from Gardnerville to Reno would be terrible-90 mins. some
days. Plus that area has gotten VERY expensive now, compared to 10 years ago.

Carson City used to be a little town with the state capitol. No more,
as it has grown tremendously in the last 10 years. As a result, you
will find major shopping, but the town is still easy to navigate. I am
not sure why you would want to live in Reno, and commute to Carson
City? I think more people make the opposite commute. Also, no one
mentioned the cold and ice in the winter. It can get rather treacherous
in the winter on that highway with black ice, and blowing snow. Good

I was referring to a commute from Gardenerville/Genoa to Carson City. I agree Gardenville to Reno is too much.

An expensive area is in the eye of the beholder. I would pay more to live south than to deal with many areas of Carson City.

Not mentioned previously that I'm aware of is that the Carson
Nugget has arguably the best low-stakes video poker in the greater-Reno
area. The vpfree database is woefully out of date for this casino. If a
local-to-that-area sent in an accurate list, others would see the
quality of the games.

Bob you are right-there is plenty of NSU from .25-1, BP, .25-1 and 2-BP .25
& $1 prog that can get high. They also have double point days that can
help quite a bit in cash back-this week my wife and I played about 3 hours
on $1 NSU and got $200 back, about a 1% return, on top of making some money
for the evening. There is no 10/7DB but tons of 9/7. Lots of PE as well
and jokers. Only drawback is the food, but I eat elsewhere and take my
cashback which is at .5%.

It's been a while since I was there, and I didn't take exhaustive notes,
but I seem to recall the following games:

9/6 Double Double Bonus 98.98%

            8/5 Bonus 99.17%

            9/6 Jacks or Better 99.54%

            9/5 White Hot Aces 99.57%

9/7 Triple Double Bonus 99.58%

9/6 Bonus Poker Deluxe 99.64%

8/5 Super Double Double Bonus 99.69%

9/5 Super Bonus Poker 99.69%

            16/10 (NSU) Deuces Wild 99.73%

9/5 Triple Bonus Poker Plus 99.80%

8/5 Super Aces Bonus 99.94%

Pick'Em Poker 99.95%

My memory isn't accurate enough that the Administrator can take this
list as gospel and change the listing, but the list is close enough so
that a local-to-that-area could easily verify whether or not these games
are still there --- for 25 cents and $1 only, I think. Add in the 0.5%
cash back (a relative rarity in greater-Reno) with regular double points
plus mailers and you can understand why I referred to it as the best
low-level video poker in greater Reno.10/7 with no cash back doesn't
come close to these games with 1% cash back.
