Wynn Resort "Extra Million Keno" Game

For those interested in Keno, the Wynn Resort has a special game
offered only in The Buffet and the Terrace Point Cafe. When playing
a 5 spot ticket for an extra 25 cents you win $1 million if the first
5 numbers drawn match your ticket.

The entire payoff schedule is 0 or 1 hit: zilch, 2 hits: your money
back, 3 hits: $5, 4 hits: $1000, 5 hits: $1 million.

Since the big payoff is 4 million times larger than the 25 cent
investment, I decided to check the odds.

The odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 24,040,016.

According to my calculations the player payback percentages are:
2 hits: 2.8%
3 hits: 2.3%
4 hits: 6.2%
5 hits: 16.6%
Overall: 27.99%

I was told that someone did win the 4 out of 5 prize of $1000. They
hit the first 4 numbers but not the 5th.

I'm surprised at the overall payback percentage ... I thought there
was a minimum well above 27.99%, set by the gaming commission.

If the return is indeed that paltry, I'd be surprised that anyone,
after winning a modest prize, would return for further play -- being
stunned by the paltry sum presumably received relative to the infrequency.

Perhaps you may want to spell out the game variables in full and
detail your calculations to receive some confirmation.

Slot machines have a minimum, other games don't.

I'm hoping someone does take the time to do the calculation. They
can do it based on the information in my post, if they know how.

The odds of winning the $1 million top prize was calculated as
follows: 80x79x78x77x76/1x2x3x4x5 = 24,040,016

The player % (or EV, using VP terminology) is more difficult to
explain briefly. The problem is knowing how to compute the "Player
%" figures for each of the paying hands (2,3,4 or 5 hits).

The formula used for 4 hits: (5x4/1x2)x(75x74x73/1x2x3) which equals
675,250. Then 675,250/24,040,016 = .001559899
Then (1000/.25)x .001559899 = 6.23960 or 6.24%

This method is followed for 2,3, and 5 hits, but the formula varies
somewhat from the one above for each hit.

If anyone is interested in knowing how to compute the EV of a Keno
game they can learn how using the book Complete Guide to Winning Keno
by David W. Cowles (Cardoza Publishing).

or use this tool:

progressive keno is sometimes positive

5of5 1
4of5 combin(5,4)*combin(75,1)=375
3of5 combin(5,3)*combin(75,2)=127,750
2of5 combin(5,2)*combin(75,3)=1,675,250
total combin(80,5)=24,040,016

EV=(1,000,000+1,000*375+5*127,750+0.25*1,675,250)/24,040,016=0.101188056
Return=0.101188056/.25=40.47522265%

<<second try:>>

For the third try, use 80 keno numbers instead of 75 bingo numbers.

Cogno

I think my second try is right, my first try was an oddball error.
80 possible numbers, 5 match yours, 75 do not.
