Woodbine Racetrack Casino--$5.00 Pick'em Poker

Hello Everybody,

I went to Woodbine Casino early this morning to play some $5.00 PKM.
Unfortunately, as luck would have it. Every machine was shut-down and
the entire section roped off. As well, every circuit board was taken
out and laid on the tables while the technicians worked away.

I wasn't able to talk to any of them but I can only speculate that a
down-grade to the 96.4455% version may be coming.(Where the straight/3
of a kind pay 50/20 instead of their normal 55/25) I hope this doesn't
happen but who knows?

If this does happen then there will be NO video poker worth playing at
Woodbine. I suppose this was inevitable given the fact that they've
been down-grading their Pick'ems since mid-2005.

What I find ironic about this is how just this past summer we've been
talking about how bad video poker at Woodbine already is and now it
appears that it might get even worse.

Would it really kill them to have 1 or 2 decent FP VP machines--be it
JoB, Deuces Wild, or PKM? Most people who play video poker AT WOODBINE
CASINO don't really know how to play with the corresponding FP
strategies so it's not like the casino is losing big money on them anyway.

I for one don't understand it so it looks as though regular trips to
Rama and Fallsview may be in the cards (pun intended) for me.

--Neil G.

The better comps, cashback and bounceback moved me
away from Woodbine and off to Niagara over a year ago.
I only hope that the increase of knowledgable players

···

at Niagara do not spell death to that play. Regards A.P. --- Neil <urban_tale@yahoo.ca> wrote:

Funny you mention it - I visited Niagara on the weekend (the old casino)..

And now some good news - they've added at least 8 more fullpay $.50 Pickem
machines - upper level, south end - slant-tops.

So while Woodbine has steadily removed their fullpay machines, Niagara seems
to be going the opposite way.

Are these new machines in addition to the 8 already
mentioned in the database ? I'd love to see them add
another bank of full pay P-E in the $ denomination.

One of the rare times I've heard of a casino actually improving their video poker inventory, rather than downgrading it. Now if Hiawatha and Point Edwards Charity casinos near Sarnia would only do the same, I wouldn't have to run all the way into Detroit just to play some "fair" video poker.

Yes they are additional machines. I didn't scout the entire floor, but I checked that
the 10 machines by the escalator (five each at top and bottom) are still fullpay.

So there are at least (18) $.50 machines.

Also, next to the bank of $.50 at top of escalator is a second bank of $1 fullpay.

What I didn't check was if the old $1 coindroppers were gone or not.

18 - 50 cent machines is what is currently in the
vpFREE database. To my knowledge there is only the 1
bank of 5 dollar machines in the place. The old coin
droppers are gone.

Thanks

Thank you for your post. My responses follow....

I wasn't able to talk to any of them but I can only speculate that a
down-grade to the 96.4455% version may be coming.(Where the

straight/3

doesn't

happen but who knows?

Well, when we "speculated" before, we were right!

If this does happen then there will be NO video poker worth playing

at

Woodbine.

That's not entirely true. They still have the progressive Double
Bonus (9/6) games.

Would it really kill them to have 1 or 2 decent FP VP machines--be

it

JoB, Deuces Wild, or PKM? Most people who play video poker AT

WOODBINE

CASINO don't really know how to play with the corresponding FP
strategies so it's not like the casino is losing big money on them

anyway.

I have a feeling that most people, even those who don't know proper
VP strategy, know that 6/5 JOB sucks. Most of the info that I have
read on "how to win at slots" says that if a casino's VP sucks, then
chances are their slots have low payback percentages. Even on an
otherwise crowded evening, the Game King video poker machines are
unoccupied, or occupied for very short periods of time. The 9/6
Double Bonuse progressive machines are usually full, even when the
progressive isn't that high. It would probably HELP Woodbine to bring
in better video poker. By "better" video poker, I mean 5c macines
(that were VERY popular when they were at RAMA), or even additional
progressive machines (that are VERY popular at Woodbine). What's the
point of having UNOCCUPIED machines with high house edge pay
schedules? The full-pay Pick'em machines were usually played short-
coin anyway.

Replies appreciated.

Hi Cosmo,

You're right, I forgot about the $0.25 Double Bonus Progressive--I
guess it's because I almost never play it. The VP Database says the
machine is 98.1% but my VP analyzer gives me a value of 97.8%. I know
this is because of the progressive RF but the question I have is: how
did they get a return of 98.1% when the value of the progressive RF
is always changing?

I fully agree with you about Woodbine bringing in "better" VP it
makes no sense for them to consistently have unoccupied $1,2,5 Game
Makers.

If they replaced them with what you mentioned then they
probably would make more money overall--even with better pay
schedules!

Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for your reply. HOPEFULLY Woodbine will bring in something
better someday.

That's okay, nobody's purfict.

From Woodbine's perspective, I understand if they're afraid of
offering "full pay" games. However, a casino can have popular "short
pay" VP games. Take Rama's popular Triple Action machines. I'm not
suggesting that Woodbine should bring THOSE games in, but Woodbine
could certaintly offer a bank of 5c or 10c 6/5 JOB. If they did, I
WOULD gamble (a little) on them. Woodbine could even look at offering
other forms of progressive VP (such as Double Double Bonus or Deuces
Wild), that would probably see a great amount of play even at
relatively low progressive levels. I'm trying to see things from the
casino's perspective!

If they replaced them with what you mentioned then they
probably would make more money overall--even with better pay

Even with LOUSY pay schedules, 5c and progressive games would see
more action than the $1 6/5 JOB games see now!

Replies appreciated.
