Withholding for non-residents

Longtime lurker, rarely do I post (sorry). I hit a Royal at Harrah's
last Friday night on a $1 machine, playing 9/6 JoB. It was the first
one in 2 years there (I've hit several in Vegas, but had a KC drought
going). I was taken aback when they brought me the check, and they
had made it out for $3840. They informed me that they had withheld
for Missouri state tax. I advised them I wasn't a MO resident, and
they said it didn't matter. When I asked what I had to do to get it
back, they advised me I would have to file a MO tax return next
spring. The first time I hit one, they didn't withhold. When did
they change that rule? And, by the way, it stinks (in case my opinion
on it wasn't obvious).

Congratulations on the RF.

MO started holding back 4% about 2 years ago, I believe it started
either 6/1 or 7/1. It is just a withholding and if you owe no state
taxes at the end of the year you can get all of it back. The tax
situation in many states is really bad, in MS they take 3% you never
see it no matter what. IN holds 3.4% and I believe you can file to
get it back. IL doesnt hold, but doesnt allow losses to offset wins,
so technically they want 3% of every w2, but again do not withhold, so
I am sure people just file incorrectly (but it may catch up with them)

Not much sympathy out there for us 'gamblers', especially if we 'win'.

Happy Royals
Jim

I agree with Jim, state withholding is pretty common these days. We (mostly Lucky Lucy) have Missouri withholdings every year and I do file a MO income tax return even though we live in Kansas. We get most (but not all) the withheld taxes back, certainly enough to make filing worthwhile.

As a side note, I have played VP at Harrah's KC practically since they opened the doors -- many hundred thousand hands -- and have yet to hit a royal there. Fortunately Lucky Lucy has made up for my shortfall. I have got my fair share at the other casinos in town but not at Harrah's. Let me add I don't think there is anything fishy or a conspiracy going on against me, it's just the way the RNG bounces.
