It would not surprise me, if that were really the case.
I did play a bit of Deuces Wild at the Palm Beach Casino here in Cannes
several days ago (the rest of the time I have had to be working...UGH!). The
machine had a really weird paytable, with a 500 coin payoff for 4 Deuces, but
5,000 coins for a Royal, playing 5 coins, of course. The rest of the paytable
was essentially NSUD, with a (Winpoker) ev of something like 98.11%. (If I
remember right, my notes are up in my room, the 1-coin numbers were
something like 1,2,3,4,4,10,15,25,100,500 --- and 5,000 for the 5-coin Royal).
Wouldn't you know it, I did get a 4-Deuces about 30 hands into the session,
after inserting 50 euros. I ended playing about 700 hands and walked away
10 euros ahead.

From my experience in Cannes a few years ago, I concluded the vp
machines were not random after seeing the same card pop up more than 20
times when drawing to two pair.
