Winter travel to Reno

Anyone want to speculate on the chance of becoming stranded in the Reno airport during the
middle of February? My wife and I (from southern Virginia where it hardly ever snows) have a
long-standing policy of visiting Las Vegas in the winter and Reno/Tahoe in the summer. For
the most part we both prefer Reno for the superior gambling options, but my wife is afraid of
becoming snowbound in northern Nevada. Since she teaches and uses her very limited
personal leave days for the vacation itself, she is unwilling to gamble on missing a day of
teaching. Please advise.

Sometimes you will encounter delays, but I think it is rare that the airport will be shut down because of weather. I remember a year ago there were three days of heavy fog that caused the airport to close, but that was a freak happenstance, and in general they are prepared to operate in the snow. So you would be more likely to have travel problems in a car than you will flying in and out of Reno. That's what my experience has been.

If you are thinking of driving up to Tahoe, though, watch the weather reports very carefully, because chains are required over the highest passes with very little snow and you could get stuck in Tahoe.

I'm sorry to tell you Dan, that there is always a chance of getting
stuck in Reno, in the winter, due to heavy snow.

I do think that it happened last year when they had a record
snowfall, in a short period of time. I remember reading that
gamblers were out of bankroll and stuck there for several days
beyond their expected departure date! What a revolting development!

However, that is NOT stopping us from attending the SL's Super Bowl
party. If we have to get stranded, I can think of worst places in
which to get stuck.

Good luck.

As David said it would be rare for this to happen. As a meteorologist
I would give the odds at well under 1%. It would definitely not be a
factor at all. The snowstorm last winter was truly a freak.

Like Babe mentioned, last year they had record snowfall. Here is the
response by the airport to that condition:

"Between December 28, 2004 and January 11, 2005, the Truckee Meadows
experienced record snowfall of 81 cummulative inches. The Airport
Authority Snow Crews worked diligently 24/7 to remove the snow from
the runways, taxiways, and ramp areas. Their dedication and hard work
allowed the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) to remain open
for all but twelve hours during this twelve day period of time, when
heavy snowfall made it difficult to keep the runways operational"

Reno does not get that much snow. Most of the time it will melt in a
day or two at the most. I would not worry about this at all. I was in
Reno yesterday and drove home to California. It was sunny in Reno and
47 degrees when I left, but 25 degrees and snowing at Donner summit.
Driving is more of a worry for delays than flying.

I've never run into the airport being closed, but the highways are on occasion.

www.wunderground.com has a good trip planner that will give you historical
weather data. National Weather Service has good forecasts as well.

Air travel is very rarely a problem out of Reno it doesn't snow down
in the valley to often. Now driving is a different story, but I'd
say the airport closes down on average less then 1 day a year.
