WinPoker vs. Frugal Poker???

Ok, so I'm ready to purchase a video poker program, which is better?
I've played the demo of WinPoker and it seems very easy and helpful,
it taught me almost everything I know about JoB. However, I've heard
very favorable reviews of Frugal Poker also. I'm sure they're both
worth the money, but which is the overall better program?? Thanks

I have both and although I use WinPoker more (cut my vp teeth with it and prefer some of its features), I'd have to say 'Frugal' -- because you get more for your money, and I presume that it is more likely to be upgraded in the future than WinPoker due to problems which apparently prevent Dean Zamzow from upgrading WinPoker. By the way, someone said that the same person wrote the software for both WinPoker and VP Strategy Master; that is incorrect, although both are available on Dean's website. Dean Zamzow wrote WinPoker and Tom Ski wrote VPSM.

Cheers.

I've made this recommendation before, buy them all! They aren't that
expensive and will easily pay for themselves with what you learn from
them and apply in the casinos. Better to have a full arsenal than be
"penny wise and dollar foolish".

If you have to choose one or the other, perhaps this will help.

One of the ways I use WinPoker is to do "simulations". For example,
many times I've setup a game and run a million simulations to see the
overall outcome. WinPoker is incredibly fast. Since I don't own
FrugalVP (yet), someone else must comment as to its speed.

On the other hand, I've had difficulty at times setting up a custom
game using WinPoker. I think I set it up right ... but it really
isn't, and there is nothing to indicate otherwise. Maybe Frugal is
better to use in this way ... I don't know.

There are "special jackpots" that can't be setup using WinPoker ...
such as a Reversible RF, or Dealt RF, or Quad bonus, to see the
impact on the Return. I don't know if FrugalVP has this limitation.

Finally, as Bill said, I think the future of WinPoker is a question
mark. My impression is there won't be future upgrades ... but this
impression may be wrong.

If all you are planning to do is practice the strategy, it appears
FrugalVP is the better choice today, because of the "strategy print"
capability, which WinPoker lacks.

In my humble opinion, this seems to be like asking what do you like better
apples or oranges? These two programs are both GREAT! But, they do
things in slightly different ways. They are both cheap. Buy them both!

FVP shines when it comes to simulations. It's also fast and it's real
power is that you're not limited to seeing just a couple of endpoints
of the simulation as you are in winpoker (where you can only view
beginning and ending credits and where credits bottomed out). FVP has
a graphical view of the entire simulation, providing a keen visual
insight into the volatility/streakiness of a game.

game using WinPoker. I think I set it up right ... but it really

FVP is far superior in presenting a far more diverse selection of
preset game options and allowing a practically unlimited number of
additional games/paytables to be added and stored. WinPoker is
woefully limited in this regard and a real frustration for anyone who
has more than a couple of unique games/paytables they want to keep on
hand.

This stuff is covered in FVP too. (uh ... what's staying your hand in
ordering a copy ASAP???)

I a pretty big fan of FVP and I recommend it over WinPoker. That
said, I'll harp on a tired song from me ... I continue to use WinPoker
for routine practice because I think its graphics are much more
pleasant on the eyes.

Sounds like what Harry would like to see is FVP to have an option for
graphics selection that would be more pleasing to the eyes. I agree
that the WinPoker graphics look very much closer to those graphics
you see in the vp machines in the casinos.

For future upgrades to both software, it would be nice to see many of
the non-full pay games (the games that are more common now in the
casinos since they've taken out many of the full-pay ones) already
included in the list of games you can choose rather than having the
users define or add them one by one.

It would be REALLY nice if WinPoker or Frugal were availiable for Macintosh!!!

Dan Paymar is working on software to fill this gap. It is in the beta testing stage now, I believe. I'm sure he will let the lists know when it is available to order.

Dream on! Those of us in the Macintosh world must rely on things like Virtual
PC to make this software run on our Mac's. :frowning:

I think that profit margins are so slim, it would not be cost effective for these
producers to also provide a Mac version.

Yeah, that's a shame, too, because I think it's always good to have some healthy competition between competing systems (and I've heard from a number of people who I respect that Mac actually has the superior system). I'd heard that Betamax was superior to VHS, too, but the numbers and marketing forces eventually made it extinct. Now I see the same stuff happening with software, too, with MicroSoft dominating. I'm a diehard Netscape fan for many reasons, but have encountered a few websites on which the browser doesn't work properly -- and with market forces shifting, webmasters are less and less interested in seeing that their websites are universally accessible.

Cheers.

Yeah, Dan's program is great. First, it loads up one of those 386-emulators from the early 90's. Then, it loads Windows 3.0 on top of it. Finally, it loads up his VP program. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes, but at least you have an imitation of a GOOD operatiing system going. Then, it.....

Just kidding. It doesn't do any of that stuff. ;>

I really have tested Dan's software and I can tell you it has features serious VP'ers will wonder how they ever got along without.

BTW, there is a free java-enabled hand analyzer at
http://gamblingtools.net It doesn't work for Kings or Better, Double
Double Bonus, but it does work for Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild,
Bonus, and Joker's Wild.

There is a product called Virtual PC that you can install on a Mac and run
WinPoker and, I presume, Frugal VP. I have it on my Mac and it works fine.
