Winning at short pay

Unless you play video poker for a living you probably shouldn't make a big
deal about <1% EV differences. One or two cards or hands are what often makes
the difference not the 1% EV. Most of us don't play to infinity so in the
short run or even medium run you don't get the EV you expect....You can say
luck, God, Karma whatever you believe in is more or equally important...(I'm not
comparing the big wheel or keno with video poker but rather 9/6 DDB vs. 9/5
DDB and NSUD vs. FPDW)

My last 3 trips have been short play/pay (one very short) and even after
large sums of money I came out on top. Did I expect to no....but I did....

Check out my photo in the members section #48 on one of my short pay
wins...hands like that make up for a lot of 1% infinite losses.

I'm sure most of us have done this but run this experiment.

Run 10,000 hands on WinPoker and use 9/5 DDB and 9/6 DDB and run 3 separate
trials for each and post the results...the results may surprise you...

The 10K hands from approx. 600 hands/hr x 6 hrs x 3 days

Yeah, I do the same thing with Frugal. Pick a machine out in the
database that I'll play it like I'm in Vegas for the day, week, many
times over. The results vary greatly, usually high totals of quads
or the royal being the differance making it postive. When you run a
million hands you would expect closer resuls to EV but they will
surprise you too. I wish I was living out in Vegas and I wouldn't
have to rely on luck.

First, Congratulations on the RF. Now as far as short pay goes, if
you make the choice to not care about 9/5 over 9/6, since the only
hand effected is a flush, which occurs about every 91 hands, you
should get about 110 flushes during your weekend and the cost is 550
coins. So at $10 single line that is only $5500. The rest of the
results are the same, but you will most likely get pretty close to the
correct amount of flushes since it is a fairly common hand.
Personally I usually play $1 and $2 VP, and I dont ever consider any
game under 99.5% unless there is some great promo to kick that up, but
we each make our own choices. By the way, I did your experiment, even
though I have run many other simulations before and the 9/6 ended up
1180 coins after 3 runs and the 9/5 ended down 1995 coins. I ran them
a,b,a,b,a,b. Of course that only shows that the game is quite
volitile, as the 9/6 had a winning session of 6070 and a losing
session of 3555 coins. Again congrats on the $40k RF and many more.

Jim
