"There are no professional craps players"
Anonymous
There are something like 187 different ways to bet at craps and not one
of them offers a positive expectation. Free odds, at breakeven, would
be the best bet, but you have to first make a negative bet to get it.
So conventional wisdom is if you want to make money at craps you need
to own the table. But at least one individual figured out a way to
make money at craps without owning a table.
I first seen the ads in the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1992. They
were little box ads in every section of the newspaper. They also
appeared on bus benches.
They read: WIN $250,000 A YEAR PLAYING CRAPS
A phone number was listed just below the headline. Notice it says "Win
$250,000" and not "Make $250,000." This is the first clue of the
hustle. Technically, it is not a lie. You could win $250,000 worth of
bets but the expectation is to lose more in bets than you win. These
ads ran for several years. Then I cought an article in the paper about
the person running the ads. An RJ journalist decided to do an expose.
The man's MO was to meet a prospective "client" at a non-threatening
place like a bar at the Mirage closest to the craps tables. He didn't
charge anything up front for his betting/strategy system. He merely
took 25% of the clients "win" in the first hour of play.
The article did not divulge the betting/strategy system. I'm guessing
it's because the journalist did not have a bankroll to play. Buy I
think it is fairly easy to guess that it wasn't an uncomplicated system
like Pass/Don't Pass with free odds. It had to be something unique.
Something the "client" never seen before. But, whatever it was, it is
a mathematical certainty that a good percentage of his "clients" would
be winners after one hour of play.
The person running this brilliant hustle probably also qualified for
the title of "Independent Casino Host." There is no telling what he
got from the casinos for bringing such action to their craps tables.
So what is the point of this post? Well, the question has to be
asked: Is it possible for this same type of hustle to be put down on
unsuspecting video poker players? The answer is YES!! Not only is it
possible but there is a good chance that it has been going on under our
noses for several years.
It did not occur to me that it could until I read rgmustains post
number 4736 on FreeVPFree. The shame of it is no one is reading that
post. While there are almost 8000 VPfree'ers there are only about 350
people on FreeVPFree. You all owe it to yourselve to read that post.
History has been repeating itself on this site. More and more people
signing on to VPFree, almost everyday. Many with no VP knowledge or
experience. Some are looking for answers and the question of whether
to go with the scientic method or a progressive method on negative
machines is going to continue to be asked.
I don't respond to these type questions anymore. I think everyone who
asks should be referred to rgmustains post number 4736 on FreeVPFree.
I have little enough time to devote to VPFree as it is. I'm not going
to waste it rehashing old arguments.
This will be my 12th consecutive year posting a healthy profit at VP
using the scientific approach. As my Uncle Herman used to say, "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it."
