I've got the VPW, but don't use it too often. For accurate strategies I
rely on vpgenius.com and I like all the other features of this free
website. I wondered if Frugal Video Poker is any better/different than
VPW. Does the Frugal VP have Pick'em Poker (VPW doesn't) ? Is there any
other vp training software you would recommend? Thanks!
Which VP software is better: Video Poker for Winners or Frugal Video Poker?
Yes Frugal VP does have Pick'em.
For a free program with Pickem, there is ViPoker. You can get the zip
file at:
http://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/simtel/win95/gambling/
It is about a third down the ftp list. It can also do OEJs.
I probably still use Dean Zamzows Winpoker the most. Love the pocket pc
version!

Both are good VP software programs, with a tutor feature AND generating a strategy chart you can print out and use while you practice and take to the casino with you. Those are the two main features you want in a software program. Each of them have extra features that are also useful. FVP does have Pick'Em which VPW does not. VPW does allow you to practice Multi-Strike which FVP does not.
For some the most important advantage of FVP is that it has a hard-copy guide to help you get more out of the program. That guide is the companion book I wrote, also called Frugal Video Poker. Not only does it give a step-by-step guide to learning to play skillful VP but in the back of the book there are lessons to use with the software.
Skillful luck as you study!

Are their strategies good ? On 9/6 jacks they say to hold a king over
10,K suited ? Did I miss something ?

It would depend on your discards. If your TK suited is accompanied by a 9
ST PEN and a non paint FLU PEN, then K only is the proper hold.

Technically his guide doesn't say to hold the K over KTs, what it
says is that the average EV of holding a K (when that is the best
play) is higher than the average EV of holding a KTs (when that is
the best play). In other words, when you are holding just a K
because you haven't also been dealt a suited T (or you have been
dealt KTs, but also have another flush penalty and a 9), that hand is
worth more, on the average, than the times that you are holding a KTs.
His methodology is to go through every possible rank/suit pattern on
the deal, and determine the best play for each of those. He then
uses a descriptor to hold details about the play being made so that
he can group similar holds together. Then he sorts those plays by
average EV. So in effect, what those strategy guides are saying is
that, for every line in the guide, there are times in which that is
the best hold. It also gives you the average EV of that hold WHEN IT
IS THE BEST CHOICE, which is usually a good indicator of the relative
strengths of two possible holds. But there will be penalty
situations that aren't readily apparent when just looking at average
EVs coming from completely different starting hands. Although, just
seeing the presence of a line that says KTs, let's you know that
given certain dealt hands, KTs is the best hold. So if that line is
below the line for a lone K, you know that you might want to use the
hand analyzer to play around with penalty situations to see when you
hold KTs and when you hold just the K.
He discloses this "drawback" of his methodology on his site, although
I don't remember exactly which page(s).
