I know many of the VP machines in Vegas pay out over 100%, especially
off-strip, but these payouts are calculated assuming perfect play and
that a LOT of hands are played (at least 40,000+). Which game has the
best payout for a short session (maybe 500 hands played)?
You may be confusing expected return and variance here.
What I mean by that, is that the form of your question suggests that
you want to ignore total game ER simply because some hands occur very
infrequently. As someone has recently suggested, perhaps the best
"short session" machine for you is a bill changer.
I don't mean that at all rudely. It's just to illustrate the point
that I'm sure there are other play considerations that are important
to you. One of those should be total ER, because most players who
take the time to sign up here will be "at least 40,000+" hands.
If I read you correctly, your sights should be set on high ER, low
variance games. These are games for which there isn't a lot of return
tied up in infrequently occurring hands. You can find the variance
statistic for games using software such as Frugal VP or Winpoker.
A notable high ER/low var games is 9/6 Jacks or Better. I expect this
might better suit your taste, inasmuch the 4K in 2-Pair JW (JW2) lends
itself to a lot of swings during a session. It's very easy to come
out of 4 hours of play down 20%. Plus, the strategy for JW2 is more
difficult and there's a much better chance you'll give up signficant
ER due to mistakes playing it than Jacks.
