Which is more volatile ?

Hi,
Don't ask me why but this question came up in a conversation..
Since the overall payback for 9/6 Jacks and eight deck BJ( with basic
strategy) are approx. the same( 99.5%) which game is more volatile ?

I imagine from a practical standpoint you may wish to refine this
question.

For example, you'll get quite a different answer if you compare
playing a single $5 ($1 - 5 credits) Jacks wager with a $5 BJ hand, as
opposed to, the volatility of an hour's play with same total wagers,
e.g. 800 $5 vp bets vs. 80 $50 vp bets.

For that matter, you may wish to compare the total wagers of each game
that would yield a comparable rating from a casino. That might call
for (depending upon casino) comparison of $4000 Jacks play with $8000 BJ.

Good points, Harry (and I know you meant to write ' ... vs. 80 $50 _BJ_ bets'). Aside from that, if we use variance as an indicator of volatility, it also stands to reason that vp will have much more volatility because its variance has to be higher due to the effects of the rare but extremely high-paying hands.

If you have "More Frugal Gambling," you can also get more information on comparing VP and BJ in the section beginning on page 31 "Volatility."
