When Visiting Vegas......

What VP game or games should one practice to have a chance in the
strip casinos and the outlying casinos? Are there a couple games that
are always a good bet or give you a reasonable chance of breaking even?

Mike,
I'm certain that the locals will give you a more complete and
better answer but I've been watching here, and some other places for
my upcoming trip in the first week in February. I'll share my
observations for what they are worth.

The answer, like most, is an "it depends" ... there are a lot of
variations, how long to you have to practice, what paytables have you
played/practiced before, and what demoniation you play.

For my tastes ... (I'll be staying at Paris by the way and will
need to take taxi's to other places as I have trouble walking.)

The strip itself, appears to be pretty well a wasteland of what I'd
refer to as really good pay tables. For instance, it appears the best
of most of the Harrah's properties is usually 8/5 BP. Some may have
some 9/6 JOB but beware of less than full table or no bonus points.

It appears to me that the quarter to dollar playwer would be best
off at the Palms or downtown at Main Street Station or 4 Queens.
These things are changing VERY often so you'll need to check the
database and watch here for updates and hope they don't make changes
in the wrong direction the day before you arrive.

IF you have played 10/7 DB, it is an over 100% game and is
available at this time. I like it but it is harder to learn than most
and has a fairly high variability.

Full Pay Dueces Wild (FPDW) is available but is less widely
available and I'm not counting on it since I'm not confident that I
can jump between more than 2 or 3 different games/paytables on this
trip.

JOB 9/6 is available at thses "off strip" places, usually with
ponts. It has less variability and is somethin I believe we should
all know.

A number of people play NSUD in these "off stip" places and like
it. If you like wild card games it would be worthwhile if FPDW is not
avaiable.

Sorry that this wasn't a short .. "learn a and go to b" answer. I'm
certain that if you share more about what you have played/practiced
and what demoninations you want that you'll get more precise answers
here from the friendly people.

Mike,

There are a number of good payback games available, but the strategy
may differ wildly depending on the type of game. 9/6 jacks or better
is the grandaddy of all the video poker games and has a 99.54% return
if the proper cards are held. Some machines are over 100% but they
have become more scarce in recent years. 9/6 JoB has low volatilty,
which means you tend to be able to avoid a losing streak that would
wipe out your money.

It sounds like you are new, my thoughts would be to pick a couple of
games only, like 9/6 JoB and 8/5 Bonus Poker (which use *almost* the
exact same strategy) and/or Deuces Wild, which also has a relatively
easy strategy to follow. You really should pick up one of the VP books
available which will explain this in more detail, and may give you an
idea of which game you would like to try and how to best play them.
Linda Boyd, Bob Dancer, Dan Paymar and John Grochowski (among others)
all have excellent books on this subject.

This database index area of this site will give you details on which
games are located at which casinos. Good Luck.

Check the vpFREE Las Vegas cross directory.

My preference is full pay deuces wild, FPDW, and full pay joker wild.
I think they are easy to learn, both well above 100%, and available in
LV at the 25c denomination.

depends what you mean by reasonable, all games have risk.

But 9/6 jacks or better is THE game to learn first, plentifull, easier
than most to learn , low varience, stratergy can be adapted to other
games such as bonus poker , bonus poker deluxe with no change & 10/7
db with some tweaking to get it close to 100.17 return

I suggest the stratergy charts from this site or Wizard of odds, look
up in the link section to reach there, I prefer the intermediate
stratergy at 99.47 return from the wizard myself.

FPDW is great but NOT plentifull by any means. ez to learn.

NSUD is my current favorite , but MUCH more difficult to learn than
FPDW & is so different I wish I learn it before I learned FPDW.

I've always been a JOB orDDB player.
I'm fairly new to learning the dueces games and have a question. I have
winpoker and see a dueces wild game there..from the preset payscale
that comes up I'm thinking that is FPDW right? is one of the other
games on winpoker the same as NSUD or do I have to go in and change the
paytable on the dueces wild game to simulate it?

thanks for any info

The default deuces game is FPDW. You can change the paytable on it or
the loose deuce game. Then select the defaut to return to the original
game. With Winpoker you can't create a deuces wild game as one of the
user defined games.

No offense to the connoisseur, but that is the tough method. Since you may
be lazy like me, here is the easy button method posted a couple of years ago
from msg. #43271:

Easy to set up. Open your WinPoker program, click on file, then new.Click
on games and choose deuces wild. Click on options, then change pay tables.
Key in the following numbers:
    Royal Flush 4000
    Four Deuces 1000
    Wild Royal 125
    Five of a Kind 80
    Straight Flush 50
    Four of a Kind 20
    Full House 20
    Flush 15
    Straight 10
    Three of Kind 5

Click on OK. Click on file, then save as, and name the game whatever you
like, nsud or dumb ducks or one of your choice. You're done. Now whenever
you want to practice this game, open your WinPoker program, click on file
and then choose the name that you used and you are ready to go. Hope this
helps.

Unless you are in need of keystroke practice and want to change the
paytable every time that you want to work on your NSU game, if you use this
easy button method, you will only have to enter the paytable one time. For
even less keying, you can also just enter the single coin payoffs, hit the
tab key, and WinPoker will automatically extend out to the max bet column
for you.
