I am going to LV to play VP 5/15-5/18. I play about 5 or 6 times a
year in LV and play $1.00 Double Double Bonus. My question is, if
you put thru $300-$400 in a machine and you haven't hit any 4 of
kinds or a royal of course, do you switch machines, keep playing the
same machine or quit. I try to limit session losses to 500.00, and
play 3 sessions per day. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. Would
like the opinion of some more experienced players.
When to quit
I've lost as much as $1000 using the stuborn method (when doing
dollars) without hitting a quad on the same machine. Although
hopping around is not going to guarantee a win, I think it's best.
If I'm not making any flushes or full houses, and I'm down a couple
hundred, I'll move. It's all in how you feel. I've also hit a royal
after putting that last $5 in the machine. A machine is a machine is
a machine as long as the paytables are identical.

If you're playing $1 DDB then I would think you're typically hitting
your $300/$400 theshhold within 20-30 minutes. Frankly, one has a
considerably less than 50% liklihood of hitting a quad in that length
of time. As such, it seems a VERY low threshold at which to give up
on a machine.
I can see getting frustrated after 90 minutes or so, but obviously
such short "droughts" are going to be experienced at least a couple of
times during a trip such as your four day upcoming one. And of
course, after an hour you're going to be down about an average of $800
without a quad in this game (assuming an 800 hph playing rate). Some
quadless hours that's going to easily be $1200 or more, although
apparently you'll leave the session well before that given your $500
session loss threshold.
In all honesty, I suspect that while you enjoy the thrills of a nice
hit playing $1 DDB, as a whole play is too uncomfortable to give the
machines sustained play when the machines "dry up". And I wish in my
own play I could rely upon the technique of changing machines to kill
a dry spell with some consistency. But that's just not the case.
If the option presents itself, I might strongly recommend that you cut
back to $.50 DDB play. I think you'd largely find it more enjoyable
and find fewer occasions where you retreat from the machines to spend
the rest of the afternoon at the bar or pool, with your tail between
your legs.
Nothing insulting intended by these comments. It's just that for
myself when I sit down to play an afternoon's session I want to sit
down with the confidence I can weather 2 or 3 hours play, come what
may. I think that's when play is most fulfilling and suspect the
constraints on your session stake keep you from discovering that
fulfillment.

My style of play is that I will donate 240 credits on a DB or DDB machine. If I don't hit anything good I will try a different machine. I find that this way I don't get quite as frustrated as I would if I just kept playing the same machine. It also gives me a little break to help maintain a level of focus. I know that it really doesn't matter if I switch machines or not, because I do believe that Vegas machines are random and honest, it just makes me feel a little better that way.
