I wasn't raised in such a background. Some conservative Christian groups used to consider gambling as evil and playing cards as tools of the devil. As far as I know, the Methodists are the only Christian denomination that still says gambling is wrong.
Also, some historians say playing cards are relatives of tarot cards, and thus a tool of sorcery and witchcraft. And we all know what the church did to people even suspected of being witches in the Middle Ages. about.com says they were brought to Europe from Islamic countries in the 14th century, and the church saw Islam as only one step better than witchcraft. The tarot deck has four suits: cups (hearts), swords (spades), pentacles (diamonds) and wands (clubs). It also has a series of trump cards called the major arcana, that are not in regular playing cards. The lowest trump card is "the fool," which some say is related to the joker in the modern day cards.
I have several tarot decks, but never learned to use them properly. Does that get me a slightly cooler spot in hell?

Yes, religious. Because face cards were associated with gambling. Gambling
was a misuse of money and was also associated with drinking, smoking, drugs,
sex, rock and roll, fire department carnivals, masonic lodges, secret
organizations, pornography, roller skating, movies, bowling at places that
sold alchol, dancing, long hair, short skirts, shopping on Sunday, swearing,
chewing, spitting,......

Sounds like you have not lived in the Bible Belt. In the south nearly
all denominations consider gambling wrong. In Tennessee, where I live
Baptists, Pentacostals and other conservative denominations recently
spent a lot of money in a failed attempt to vote down a state lottery.
For them, it was a moral issue.

There is an art of reading tarot cards. Each card in the deck has a given meaning, and that meaning can be different if the card is upside-down. There are different ways to lay the cards on the table to read and interpret them. I'm saying that even though I have the decks, I never learned these skills.
Sorry, I forgot that some people not quite as far along on the Highway to Hell as I am aren't familiar with that.

Then I stand corrected. These denominations aren't a numerous and vocal where I live. Only the Methodists (and the Muslims) speak out against gambling here.
