What's Your Story?

Jean Scott once told me video poker is a "hard way to make easy money".

So, I'm looking for a little "inspiration" to start the New Year. Maybe
a sign that in the midst of adversity there is always hope.

The ultimate experience is one I have never had. I've never been dealt
a royal. But two of my more lucky experiences are these:

1) Playing 8/5 $5 Super Aces I was dealt one ace and drew the other
three.

2) Playing $5 8/6 Bonus Deluxe I held one jack and drew the rest of the
royal.

So, let's start the year with hearing about some of your good
unexpected fortune on this "bumpy" road called video poker. It might
just give you an extra boost to "hang in there".

When I first started gambling I was going to the local Indian casino
(about 2 miles away) playing slots and losing. Someone at work
suggested that I should try video poker. Tried it as a total novice
just guessing at which cards to hold. Not knowing anything about
paytables or strategy, I continued to lose. After playing a double
bonus machine and losing, I switched to another machine and was dealt a
Royal Flush (my first RF). Turns out this was a short pay Deuces and
Joker machine. After that I became more interested in learning VP and
joined the Skip Hughes Group. Met Jean and Brad and they changed
everything on my approach to gambling. Thanks Jean!

Recovered from my losses and am now on the positive side even though I'm
way behind on the Royal Flush cycle. The Deuces have been good to me!

I think this is probably pretty unusual, but I have had 14 royals
since 2003 with 5 of them dealt (including one at pick'em, which I
consider to be dealt). The best streak was 1 dealt on 4/22/2007 at
Seneca Niagara on $.25 BP, then another dealt at MSS on 5/21/2007 on
$.25 BP, then one on $.25 PKM at the Fremont the next day. Of the 14
total, three royals were at 5-cent, one was on a 10-cent progressive
and the remaining 10 were on quarters. I'm anxiously awaiting my
first $1 royal. Hopefully that will be on the $1 pick'em at Seneca
Niagara. I play there about once every 3 months and then take 2
trips to LV per year, where most of my play is on $.25. I've had 4
deuces holding only 1 and been dealt deuces once and once on the re-
draw but never got a royal holding only 1 or none. That's the goal
for 2008 or at least a dealt royal on dollars

Is this plea for inspiration a bit incongruent as far as VP goes? What happened to the advice
so often stated here, "If it's not fun, don't play"?

I guess that we are back to the dichotomy between some people playing for fun and others
trying to play for profit.

I think of vpFREE members as representing a total spectrum of those playing just for fun to only for profit.

For the record, I am a very good player but not perfect. If I practiced 1000 hands and afterwards checked for errors I would find a couple but not many.

So, the thought that something amazing can happen on the next hand is something I work hard to try to remember in the midst of all that intense concentration .

To that extent, my post was meant to generate those experiences which any of us might find a bit helpful on any given "rough" day.

And I thank those of you who privately messaged me with even more astounding experiences. May the next one happen soon!

I've been playing VP off and on for about 3 years. I was living in
Reno (great full pay VP at a number of casinos!) since May of 2007.
For about 5 months I only got 2 royals. In the 1st week of December, I
was playing a Bonus Poker progressive nickels (must play 20) at the
Peppermill, and hit a royal for about $1060 win. I had driven there
and wasn't drinking, so I thought I deserved a draught beer. I walked
over to a bar serving draught, sat down and tossed a $20 in VP machine
on the bar. The bartender came over and took my order. It was fairly
quiet and he returned quickly. I gave him $5 and he asked if I wanted
change (I usually tip a $1 for comped drinks). I said no, that I had
just hit a royal. As I'm sitting there, I'm playing a quarter Bonus
Poker (8/5) while I'm talking to the bartender. Dang, I hit another
royal for $1000! I had also just hit a 4-of-a-kind (>4, 125 payout)
just prior. I cashed out and tipped the bartender a $20 (not bad, $25
for humoring a happy VP player). I'm walking away with a ticket for
$1000, and the bartender shouts to me that I still have about $75
left. I cashed that ticket as well.

Basically I hit 2 royals in less than 5 minutes on 2 different
machines. The best showing I ever had at a casino (so far).
