Last night, while playing at the Fiesta, I saw a situation that
really bothered me, and I am curious what others might have done in
the same situation. I was playing on the slant top quarter deuces
next to a couple. The man hit 4 deuces, left the machine without
getting a payout (simply left his jacket there and put a cup on top
the machine) moved one chair away to the other side of me, and
proceeded to play for more than an hour at that machine, leaving the
original winning machine tied up and of no use to anyone else who may
have wished to use it. I felt this was extremely inconsiderate and
rude, and tried hard to think of a mild and non-threatening way to
ask why he felt he should leave the machine sit like that. (There
seem to always be so many players that want to play the slant tops
for comfort reasons.) Of course, I ended up deciding that anyone
arrogant enough to leave the machine tied up like he did, was not
going to take kindly to my asking why, so in the end, I did nothing.
I saw noone ask to use the machine and perhaps noone wanted to, but I
cannot help but think it could have been me looking for a seat, and
not have found one. So, I am posting this question to the group, to
see what your answers are concerning this situation---perhaps you can
offer help on how it could have been handled. (By the way, amidst
all this moralizing that was churning around in my head, I managed to
hit my first royal since November!)

Rule number 27: When you hit a RF, anything that anyone else does is okay.
Seriously, you probably did exactly the right thing by doing nothing. It's
just a matter of "some people..."

Congrats on the royal! This sort of shit happens in AC all the time, especially at the one bank of good Pick Em machines in Trump Plaza. If I'm looking for a seat there and see them "cupped," I usually just keep on walking. These machines are in the smoking section, and the regulars that hog them are nasty people who smoke a lot and give me bad vibes when I sit near them.
If I see someone playing two, I ask if I can have one. She (and it's almost always a woman) says no, and I give her a look as if to say "You're a selfish pig" before I move on.
One time a man "cupped" a machine and went to play a second machine on the opposite side. Someone else came by and asked if it was being played. I said (in my stage whisper, so the guy could hear) that someone was holding it while he played another machine, and that I think it's extremely rude to hog two machines when other people want to play. If she wants to sit down and play, I won't stop her. She moved the cup to an adjacent seat and started playing. A few minutes later, the guy came around, removed his cup and glared at me.
In this case, if you didn't want to play the machine in question, after an hour or so it might be wise to discreetly mention it to a slot attendant _ especially if all the other machines in the bank are taken and people are obvioulsly looking to play. If you're a little more aggressive, you can "accidentally" hit the cash-out button so the bells and whistles go off. If it's an EZ Pay, you can hand the man his payoff ticket and apologize for the "accident."

I would have asked him , "If you are not going to play that machine would you mind if I did because I heard the Royal always follows the Ducks". Then watched for his reaction.

I saw no one ask to use the machine and perhaps no one wanted to,
perhaps you can offer help on how it could have been handled.
(A) If you are helping unknown player X to play this machine, I think
your fretting is wasted. If player X is too shy to play a cupped
machine, he/she probably had other options. You shouldn't spend too
much of your active brain-space on imagined "situations", when you
need full concentration on your own game. [Despite the distraction,
you managed to draw a Royal! How many to the Royal did you hold?] It
could be player X will smoke you out of your cozy machine.
(B) The other situation is, say, IT IS YOU wanting to play a cupped
machine with credits on it. I wouldn't wait more than about ten
minutes (in case the person has genuinely gone to "see a man about a
dog") before I would grab a "suit" - a slot pit boss/floor walker
whatever they are called, and request their help to play the machine.
Let HIM or HER handle the rude machine hogger - that's why they earn
the Big Bucks.
Rude folks can be out-ruded, but you have to be in the mood for such
sport.
