Although not exactly an example of dumbest play that worked, the
almost-dumbest play I've witnessed was a young drunk kid with a bunch
of his drunk buddies playing Deuces Wild. The kid is dealt deuces,
but one of his buddies tries to tell him to throw away the hand
because "They always do stuff like that -- show something that looks
good to keep you from getting the better hand on the draw." The kid
who's playing is conflicted. Is about to get bullied into dumping the
hand, when he turns to me and asks: "What do you think?" I tell him
it's not been my experience that there's a better hand lurking behind
the second best hand in the game, and he's about to throw away $250.
With relief, he holds the hand and gets his jackpot.
I'm glad he asked, because I've learned not to interfere when not
invited. Even when asked the "Should I hold this one or that one?", I
tend to be vague unless there's a major difference. Too many hateful
glares when I've given good strategy advice that didn't provide a
winner on a particular hand.
