Sklansky's books are excellent, but not ones I'd recommend to a new
player at the game.
One book to start with could be Bill Burton's book that Jonathan
mentioned in an earlier post, available here from Amazon:

Another *excellent* book is Winning Low-Limit Hold 'em by Lee Jones.

I would also check Overstock.com's prices since they are frequently
cheaper than Amazon, especially if you're only going to order one
book.
After playing several hours and getting a firm grasp on the game, I
would then move on to Sklansky's works.
If you're considering signing up to play Hold 'em online, be sure you
signup through an affiliate that offers you something. All
affiliates get paid a healthy commission from online poker rooms (for
example, Party Poker pays $75 to affiliates for every new member that
is sent their way.)
I've always signed up through an affiliate "Pokersourceonline.com"
and have sent numerous VPFree members (including our Administrator)
to them to signup. I have not heard of anyone having problems
getting the gift that was promised (assuming the member went through
the signup process correctly and met the play requirements). If
you'd like additional information, read message #36046 in the VPFree
archives. I give a lengthy explanation of the Pokersourceonline.com
deal in that message. If you're interested in signing up, I have an
upgrade code that will get you a larger gift (500 chipset instead of
300 chipset or $90 in giftcards instead of $60). I can also get a

hmmm..Winning low limit hold'em by lee jones helped me
out in the beginning.
Then there is Small Stakes Hold'em by ed miller....
It's good to read a few books then play a whole
lot...after you learn how to play...bonus chasing can
be very lucrative....i've made about $2,000 this month
on it.
