For extracurricular activities, well, theres not a whole lot there. Wendover is in the middle of a bunch of nowhere desert salt flats. The casinos are actually in West Wendover, Nevada, population about 6,000. Wendover is on the Utah side, population about 3,000. But two police, departments, two fire departments, two city councils, etc.
There's golf, not my cup of tea. There's the concert hall, but I seen all those acts 35 years ago. You can meet the Jack Mormons (backsliders), their religion is a little kinky but they seem to be pretty nice folks. There's the swimming pool or the spa. Lounge acts in all three joints. Then there's poker, now that's something a guy can sink his teeth into (the jack mormons are pretty bad players).
Haven't been there in three years but I remember the place fondly. Mainly because the Peppermill properties (Rainbow, Peppermill, Montego Bay) had an extremely user friendly slot card. It started out at .5% and graduated up to .8% as I went through the tier levels. I wound up with the diamond card (the highest), 1.3 K as I recall to get there.
First, Montego Bay has the best rooms, very big with very nice furniture (request Montego Bay if you can). The Peppermill rooms are very small. The Rainbow east wing has very small rooms, but the west wing is fine. Shuttles run about every 15 minutes, around the clock, between the three properties. They even shuttle you to the concert hall. The Rainbow and Peppermill have free internet computer in the lobby.
If you've been to the Peppermill/Reno then you've been to the Wendover Peppermill properties. They have the same neon glitz motif.
The one knock on the slot club was it was don't ask/won't tell. But it's easy to figure out. You have to go to the information booth to find out how many comp dollars you have on your card. I would go up and ask then go run a thousand in action and go back and ask again to figure out what I was getting. But past that point the card was very good. If you had the comp dollars you got anything you wanted. This is what I used the card for:
Hotel stays....have to get a voucher at the information booth.
In Room Pay Per View Movies....have to get a voucher, but at your leisure
Gift Shop....clothes, cigarettes, top shelf booze....have to get a voucher at the information booth. 4 pack a day limit on the cigs.
Spa....have to get a voucher.
Beauty Salon....have to get a voucher.
Concerts....have to get a voucher.
Each casino has a buffet, a cafe/coffee shop. and an espresso shop. The Rainbow has the Steakhouse. No voucher needed, just go in and pig out then hand them your card. There are differences between the buffets, and differences on the menus of the coffee shops. We're not talking about world class cuisine here but it beats the hell out of the Colorado Belle buffet. Want to start the day with a jolt of espresso, just hand them your card.
Slot, Blackjack, Keno, Craps, and Poker Tournaments....have to get a voucher. There were a few tournaments a month of the Slot, Blackjack, Keno, Craps variety. And several poker tournaments a month in the Rainbow and Montego Bay poker rooms.
Wanna get snockered while catching a lounge act? Go to the information booth and get a $100 voucher. Hand it to the bartender who will start you a tab for up to the $100 amount. Drink and dance until you puke. Try to hustle one of the jack mormon girls back to your room. If you get in a wrestling match with her jack mormon boyfriend (or girlfriend, you never know these days), when security shows up, no problem, just hand them your Diamond Card. They will escort you to your room to sleep it off. If the jack mormon boyfriend has one of those beginner cards, or no card at all, he'll be escorted off the property and told DON'T COME BACK!!!!
Come to think of it, there's lots to do in Wendover....at least for me.
How many mormons should you carry with you on a fishing trip?
You should always carry at least two. If you only carry one he'll drink all your beer and smoke all your cigarettes.
Have fun in Wendover.
