Good idea. I did that once for a Jane Monheit show at the Claridge in Atlantic City that a friend wanted to see. When I saw the tickets weren't selling well, I called a host two days before the show, and asked if I could use money in my comp account to buy the tickets. She called me back and said they'd comp me outright. The tickets included two drinks, we got right in front of the stage and my friend was in ecstasy. I thought the show was good, though the music isn't my favorite. Then we met her band while eating dinner in the coffee shop at the table next to us.
My guess is, the host figured they wanted a full showroom, and giving me a comp would get a known gambler into the house on Saturday night. It cost the casino nothing, and we did both gamble.
One time, I was playing blackjack at Caesars Atlantic City, and the hosts were running around the pit offering tickets to that night's show to anyone who wanted them. Sure doesn't hurt to ask.
For those who want to try something really crass, read the second edition of "Comp City" by Max Rubin for another trick. He used it for really popular and expensive shows. But, it takes a large wad of cash and "major league cojones" to pull off, he writes.
