W2Gs on ships

Many years ago you would never get W2Gs onboard ships, but now many
companies issue them. Most of the ones issuing the W2Gs have their headquarters in
the U.S. Carnival issued me a couple. Also you have to watch out, because I
was issued an incorrect one (for $19000 instead of $1600!!). On some ships
you won't get the W2G until the morning you are to depart (instead of at the
time of the jackpot), so if there is a mistake it can be more tricky to get
them to change it (Carnival did in my case). Some ships may tell you that a
W2G will be issued, but you might not receive it. This doesn't mean that the
ship won't send a copy to the IRS - no way to know.

The safest thing is to keep a Gaming Diary and record all wins and losses,
especially all W2G jackpots.

I also was issued a W2G on a cruise ship. Norwegian Cruise Lines.
My experience was a bit unusual. Once I hit the royal, the change
people were all excited because I had been only 1 of 3 people
playing that progressive. Two "suits" came over (very polite and
friendly) - then we all had to wait for another man with a
technician who opened the machine and verify the win by running back
the last 5 hands on the machine. Once they verified the win was
good, it only took them about 10 minutes to complete the paperwork.
The entire time though one of the "suits" was with me and very
pleasant. All happy that I had won and he told me it took less time
to do american paperwork than other ones they must do.
