We've used about 94% of our allotted storage space for vpFREE messages.
At some point soon, Yahoo will start deleting messages on a FIFO basis.
I've tried to ask Yahoo about getting more space, but they don't respond,
so I'm assuming what we've got is all we're going to get.

Options:

Do nothing and have messages disappear on a FIFO basis.

Save all the messages into a file - Probably would require saving each message
individually, and I don't know if a search feature could easily be incorporated
into the resulting file.

Delete old messages that don't have very much archival importance - I've done
a little of this, and may do more on a systematic basis in the future. It
would be helpful if everyone would search the message archives, using their
ID or Email address, and delete any of their messages that have served their
purpose.

Start a new Yahoo Group (vpFREE_2, vpFREE_3, etc.) every time we reach our
message limit and use the old groups only for message archiving purposes -
This solution would work, but the logistics are mind boggling to me.

Do you or anyone out in the audience save the digests ? You can
then place the old digests in a folder in the Files section. This
will buy us some time. A lot of time, actually.

Tom,

I don't know if you have this option... but on Compuserve when I used to sysop a group we had the same problem. I had the option of "locking" some messages from being automatically being deleted.

That's a much more efficient way if you have that control. Just protect the few that mean something for archive purposes and let the rest be scoured by the FIFO method.

Otherwise, as you suggested, just periodically delete old messages [indian thread, iraq thread etc] especially when it's off topic from VP. I would also think that after a couple of months, very few of the links to news articles still work. Most sites like LV Advisor and such move the current month's/week's articles to an archive anyhow and the links you've set up will no longer work.

Hi Tom,

I would vote to do as you suggested. It is really a question of how many people actually search the archives. I find that information older than one year is not too useful. We have almost 15 months of messages in vpFREE. So if yahoo deletes the oldest stuff, that is OK with me. I get the individual emails and save the ones that I'm interested in to a separate folder. That is an easier way for me to find things.

U could start by deleting all the non VP related messages. They have
no reference value..
