vpFree Authors

There are several people who post on vpFree regularly and write for
various gambling web sites (this writer included), but how many
posters here have actually written a book or books? As far as I know
there are: (and I have their books)

Bob Dancer, Dan Paymar, Jean Scott, Linda Boyd, and the always
controversial, Rob Singer (although he rarely posts anymore).

I know there are plenty of other people here who "could" write a
book. People like Skip Hughes, Scott Krause, etc., and VP Pappy.
(oh, wait..is he real?) Even guys like Harry Porter and Albert
Pearson, among others, seem to have the skills and knowledge to
write a gambling book if they wanted to put forth the effort.

Am I missing any other books by any of our posters?

When my EV from writing exceeds my EV from playing, I'll consider
writing a book, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. Kind of
like waiting for good VP to return to Detroit (although I hear it's
not bad upstate).

Is Bill Burton a member of VPFree? He wrote and published a great book on
poker...a "how to" book for beginners. He is the ABOUT guide to gambling.
He also writes for Strictly Slots and a few other publications. Annie

Thank you very much for the comment, but I lack two things to become a good writer.
No writing talent.
No patience.

That's true for all writers, sort of, but many of us would
define "EV" somewhat differently than money alone. Many of us get
significant non-monetary value from this process. Jean, for example, has
spoken about one reason she writes is the "fifteen minutes of fame"
effect. It's fair to say that she also values the "leaving the world a
better place" effect. (I am by no means "picking on" Jean. Both these
factors are important to me as well.)

Strictly in terms of dollars and cents, writing about gambling
has been less lucrative for me than gambling itself. However, studying
things deeply enough to write authoratively about various aspects of
video poker has made be a better player. Had I not been involved in the
'Winner's Guide' project, or prepared and taught so many classes, I
would not know those games nearly as well as I do.

There is an old maxim about "the harder I prepare the luckier I
get". I've definitely had some lucky bounces come my way gambling-wise.
I believe that these two things are related to each other. I frequently
advise my students to take up writing about the game --- even if they
have no intention of ever publishing what they write. The greater value
comes from the writing process --- not the rewards from book sales,
which for most of us aren't that great.

People like Skip Hughes, Scott Krause, etc.,

Thanks. I appreciate the compliment too, altho I'm not certain that

writing about next month's casino promotions would be a best seller! I was a
journalism/communications major in school, but everyone told me back then
that I would never get a job doing that, so I never really pursued it and
did lots of other things (mostly music and entertainment) in between. I've
always enjoyed writing but don't consider myself to be a great writer. I'm
working on improving that all the time. If I have a writing strength, it's
getting the information "out there" to people who want it. I am working on
several book projects, including collaborating on a couple things, and a
ghostwriting project, but only 2 would be considered gambling related. No,
they are NOT gambling strategies! I do have lots of great mentors including
but not limited to Jean Scott, Anthony Curtis (he's really an excellent
writer, by the way, but he doesn't even really recognize that!) Jeffrey
Compton, Wendy Tucker and Steve Bourie among some editors and teachers.
Maybe someday soon a "real" book will come to life!

Thanks again for the kind words. In the meantime I better get all of your
bonus point days posted!

Regards,

Scot
