Hi Gang,
I hope this post doesn't start a war like the one I made about the
strategy cards LOL!
According to Sklansky, blackjack and VP are two of about five
casino games in which the player can have a slight edge over the house
with optimal play. Of those two which do you feel is the better game?
I'll give a lean towards VP IF a proper FPDW or Jacks or Better game
can be found, especially in a progressive jackpot.
VP vs. Blackjack??
Sorry to go off-topic, but what are the other three games?
Thanks.

I do not have the book referred to but here are two possibilities:
Pai Gow Poker when allowed to play as the bank and at least four other
players at the table.
Table Poker - This assumes you play significantly better than the other
players at the table since the rake is larger than most other games.

Hi Paul:
I used to play a lot of blackjack and almost never do now. Bearing in
mind that you're posting your question on a vp board, I still believe
most of us will say vp is a better game. My reasons for choosing it
are 1) the casinos sweat bj more than any other game, and have taken
steps to reduce the player advantage, which is how we got 6:5 bj
payoffs, dealers hitting soft 17, no doubling after splits, minimal
shoe penetration, etc., 2) table game comps, in my experience, have
come nowhere near those I've received from playing vp. Having said
that, it's getting more difficult to find games over 100%, so you
really have to shop for good promotions and player's clubs and know
the games you're playing well enough to give yourself an opportunity
to maximize return.

I totally agree with Drew on his points 1.& 2.
As a former, and still occasional BJ player (now only when EH asks me
to play next to him) I would like to add a 3rd point.
What actually weaned me completely away from BJ in favor of VP, is the
excitement and anticipation of a jackpot hand. The rare but oh so
lovely days when we pop that elusive royal, 4 ducks, 5OAK or
4Aces+kicker!
For me, a dime to quarter bet BJ player, there's nothing even close to
the risk/reward factor in BJ, that is always present in VP.
Just my opinion, of course.

The beatable games, according to Sklansky are: poker, blackjack, horse
racing, sports betting, progressive slots and VP. The unbeatable are:
roulette, craps, keno, baccarat, let it ride and carribbean stud. Keno
being the worst with a 30% house advantage. This is from his book
Gambling for a Living w/ Mason Malmuth.

It might be possible to beat casino banked Pai Gow Poker if the house way
of setting hands is sub-optimal enough. However, it would likely be a very low
EV situation and would require substantial computer analysis. Not to mention
getting a copy of the house way of playing. Same thing might be true of Pai
Gow.
BTW, trying to bank Pai Gow Poker in some casinos in California could be
hazardous to your health. There was a post quite a while ago on rec.gambling
(before the split) by someone who banked BJ and was told by some of the other
bankers never to come back after his session was over. The other bankers
appeared to be backed by gangs in CA.

The rake is not that large except in some of the low action games like $1-5
spread limit stud. In most games the rake is much lower than the edge a
good player has. Variance in no-limit games can be high though.

Craps is beatable if you learn how to throw the dice and convince the
pit that you don't know how to throw the dice. Keep in mind that the
casinos claim they love winners, but that's just marketing bullcaca,
they love to take winners in the backroom and strip search them is
more like it.

Also beatable are piggy-bank/bonus slots.
