VP trip report - Buenos Aires, Argentina

I just returned from a pleasure trip waaayyy down south, and
though it would be fun to report back on the VP I encountered.

The big casino in the city is at the Hipodromo de Palermo
racetrack. It's about a $5 cab ride north of the city center. The
casino is *very* smokey, and only has video slots (no table
games). And it's freakin' huge, with every kind of video slot you've
ever heard (and I mean HEARD - It was noisy as hell).

There were a few VP machines scattered here and there,
however:
(Note that the currency for the machines is the Argentine peso,
and there are about 3.09 pesos per US dollar. So ...
$1 = 32.4 U.S. cents, $.50 = 16.2 cents, $.25 = 6.1 cents, $.10 =
3.25 cents)
- The best games they had were 9-6 DDB and 9-7 DB at $1, $.50
and half the .$.25 machines. Was actually surprised to find such
good options.
- No single-line machines at the $.50 (2 in the whole place) and
$1 (2 in the whole place) levels, just triple play, oddly enough.
- At the .25 and .10 level, the machines offered both triple and five
play.
- A few broken (or in some cases missing) buttons.
- They had spin poker too, but I don't play that so I didn't look at
the pay tables.
- There's a slot club, but I didn't inquire as to the benefits. There's
an occasional electronic horse race on the card reader that
works just like the bingo game with the slot card at Wynn. Very
likely the same company.
- Witnessed some atrocious play by the locals, like holding a
single deuce in DDB.
- I actually managed to score a royal on the $.50 triple play, but
then lost it all back when the machines went cold on me. Geez,
when triple play goes bad, it's three times as bad! (I don't like the
multi-line games)

Supposedly there's a river boat casino on the docks near
downtown B.A., but I never saw it.

I very much enjoyed the city. Beautiful weather, a vibrant culture
and great food (and cheap too!).

I also bounced over to Uruguay for a couple of days and noticed:
- A casino on the main drag in Montevideo, the capital. Did not
play there.
- A large casino at the Conrad hotel at Punte del Este, the resort
city. I played a bit of 7-5 BP there. Interestingly, they use U.S.
dollars. And I *think* I saw a $5 (U.S.) 10-7 DDB machine in the
high-end area.

Cheers,

- BP

It's 10-7-80 DB, actually, on a Game Maker. Been there for years. If I
remember correctly, the Conrad is now a HET property. I can see some
HET suit seeing this post and calling Uruguay to get the machine
downgraded. Not without doing the usual 30 or so focus groups first.

How's the mail on the game?

That's right, 10-7 DB - my typo. I'm afraid I don't get your final
question though ... BTW, it was pretty tough playing any BP in
Punta given all the surfside distractions, if you know what I
mean.

I wish I visited the casino at the race track and the
one in Montevideo when I was in the area.

I am very surprised at the reports because I visited
the casino in Buenos Aires in Puerto Madera. A
riverboat gaming place.

The few VP slots paid 7/5 for JOB and also the
casino in Colonia, Uruguay; Mendoza, Argentina
(both there); and the two in Ushuaia. I did not
see slot clubs at any of them.

Colonia is a sleepy fun trip an hour from BA by
ferry. From there one can take a bus to Montevideo
and Punta del Este.

Few bargains to be had in Argentina now even
though there is high unemployment and at
least 20-30% living below the poverty line. For
that reason, visitors should not wear expensive
jewelry and be careful of brazen pickpockets.
They will yank earrings off your ears even if
pierced.

Also, exchange rate is around 3.1 pesos to the
dollar but some of the casinos gave only 2.9 to
the dollar, so you lose even more.

I would avoid casinos and enjoy the wines and
meats although they could learn how to spice
their foods. They think black pepper is spicy.
Learn the tango with Robert Duvall.

Linda Boyd, I would advise you to avoid.
