Patrick;
Based on you stated requirements, I will sign on to Don's accurate reply. I'm also assuming that you are talking about playing in Las Vegas. In fact, there are only two games you need to learn, the other being KBJW. However, in practice almost every place that has the Joker Poker also has FPDW. So there is no need to worry about jokers until long after you have mastered FPDW. (The main advantage to it is as a backup when your fellow "profit players" have taken up all the FPDW machines.)
FPDW is not only by far the most common of the best paying games, it is quite easy to learn, penalty card situations add basically nothing to the return, and a strategy can be simplified even further with no reduction in return by separating out the obvious (no-brainer) hands. (The Frugal Gambler card I sell has "no-brainers" plus 20 lines and returns 100.76%.)
However, you will need software to practice on, I recommend Frugal Video Poker by Jim Wolf or Video Poker for Winners from action Gaming. You need to learn the strategy perfectly, so that you can play it fast without thinking. Speed can increase your return if you are playing accurately or decrease it (or negate it), if you are making errors.
Adding in cashback and other cash equivalents and depending on the multi-points or other promos and mailers, you can find flat top (non-progressive) FPDW games that return very close to 102% (although maybe not every day). On an every day basis, there is no problem playing at 101% or better. You have made a great start by joining this group.
P.S. In order to maximize your return (and minimize your variance), it's best to try to find the best available return each day, which means some travel (I mean within the LV valley). With gas prices being so high, this is a definite trade off to consider for the quarter player. Good planning will help.

Patrick,
FPDW at $.25 level is available in many locations in Las Vegas. With
perfect strategy (not too dificult to learn for FPDW), and playing 800
hands an hour...your expectation is around $7.50 per hour.
You can improve on your hourly return by selecting those casino's that
have a progressive royal. Also play at other casinos on the dates they
have multiple points. I'm guessing that one can push up the hourly
expectation to around the $10.00 per hour level when including the
cash back, bounce-back cash and the slot club points. This site is an
excellent source for researching which casino(s) offer the above.
Good Luck!
