I know all about the best cards to play, but has there ever been any
discussion about when people feel (or experience)it is time to leave a
machine. I notice that some people go from machine to machine
throughout the day. It seems to me if I strike it big on a machine, if
I stay there for an hour or so more it drags me down. Not saying that
I am going to win or lose on another one either. I have also heard of
people hitting 2 royal flushes on a single machine, but not stating
how long they stayed on that particular machine. Any comments???
VP stratagies
you're a favorite to lose money in any given hour-long session on any
machine, whether or not you previously hit a jackpot on that machine.
if giving back some of a jackpot bothers you, then you're better off
leaving once you hit it. go celebrate and come back and play more
another time.
switching between two identical machines makes no difference to your
expected return, as i'm sure you know. personally i switch machines
when the voices in my head tell me to. works pretty well for me.
cheers,

It matters not (mathematically) which machine you play as each hand is
independent. Now, if you want to appear to observers to be a typical
(i.e., superstitious) player, I would move from a "cold" machine in
search of a "hot" one. And, somewhat contradictorily, move from one
after in your words, "striking it big."

That is kind of what I do. Just wondering what others do. I was delt 4
aces on a 50 play one time and figured to stick with that machine. It
did not pay well after that. Went to another and it did well. I know
that it is random, but I play for the excitement, so I guess I need to
follow my instincts as well. What I have been doing is when I win a
fairly big hand, I let the machine go down only to a certain level,
then switch, it seems to work.

There is no correlation between how you feel, and what any machine
will return in the future. This has been studied extensively enough
that we can be confident that any sense that your feelings give
meaningful information... is simply mistaken.
Ah, my favorite subject/issue/question. We all know
the math & stats re each hand and each machine being
equal. My problem with the math & stats is that they
are based on the long term. Long term is millions of
hands. I only play 800 hands an hour for maybe six
hours a session. In the short term the math & stats
are subject to huge swings both positive & negative.
Then there is the " luck " factor. The question on how
long do you play a cold machine: I set a loss limit
i.e. $100 for quarter VP games before moving on. With
a hot machine I also set a loss limit from the high
point. This is all subjective based on your own
feelings. Yes, I have had more than my share of VP
gambling luck by beating the math & stats in the short
term by moving from cold machines in search of the hot
one. i.e. Thursday,2/8/2008 Harrrahs Reno had a one
day $110 express play coupon that I used to play their
ten coin quarter 9/6 JOB game. I had to play thru two
cold machines before finding a third hot machine that
warmed up with lots of Full Houses & 4OAK's, then a
two card draw to a SF & then a two card draw to a 2K
RF. ( all in two hours play ) I had to leave to
catch my bus home so can not say if the hot machine
stayed hot. Also, I have hit two RF's on the same
quarter Duces Game/machine at the Silver Legacy within
two hours twice in 2007. Just luck.

The "long term" topic is usually discussed in false notions.
It's a valid consideration in the case of something like the RF, where
over 250 hours of play you might see just 1 or 2 RF's, or see as many
as 10+. That represents a huge spectrum of return. It's only over
much longer play that you can look for actual results to adhere
reasonably closely to expected -- hence the idea of the "long term".
But the bread and butter, lower paying and more frequently occurring
hands can be expected to play out reliably in MUCH shorter order.
Over 250 hours of play, you can heavily count on an 8/5 JB player
coming out behind a 9/6 JB player when unpredictable royal experience
is excluded from results. Ultimately, there comes a point where it's
unrealistic to think that luck might overcome the relative drain of
8/5 JB. But it's hard to dissuade many of that notion.
Then there is the " luck " factor. The question on how
long do you play a cold machine:
There's no such thing as a "cold machine" ... just a cold run of luck.
Again, for those who are convinced that machines do have cold and hot
cycles
- Harryu
I must agree with friend, Harry's statement. I have, on several
occasions, dragged my ice-cold derriere' from one non-cooperative
machine to another.
Nevertheless, if paying heed to this superstition makes me feel
better, or more confident about continuing to play, I will not stop
machine-hopping just as James does. My theory is that it can't hurt
either. {(O:

You've fallen here into a common misconception. You believe that luck
adheres to a machine, so by moving from one machine to another,
you'll find the one that (at least temporarily) is filled with good
luck (in a subtle, invisible realm of course).
The truth is that luck adheres not to a machine, but to your socks.
What's necessary is to carry with you multiple pairs of socks. When
your luck shows that you're wearing "cold" socks, simply change to a
new pair. This saves you from having to move from one machine to
another.
If your sock supply is limitted, it's perfectly OK to merely turn
your socks inside out, rather than changing to a different pair. In
either case, the sock method will help change your luck EVERY BIT as
effectively as changing machines.

This thread has been reactivated recently. I was actually in Reno
when you first posted so didn't reply then. I've hit two royals
within 15 minutes of each other on the same machine and have had a
machine go stone cold on me after hitting a royal. The thing is you
can't predict ahead of time if the next hand will be a winner or a
loser. I have had a "cold" machine turn around unpredictably and I've
won back all my losses on a machine and then some and I've had
machines that have never come to life and I've had machines that have
been hot all day. That's part of the randomness of VP and there is no
way to predict in advance how your machine will behave. OTOH, as long
as you are playing a game that is is not worth less than what you were
playing before, I don't see a reason not to change machines either.
I've done it just because it makes me feel a little better to move one
machine over sometimes. I know it isn't hurting anything, so why not.
If you go from one NSUD machine to the next, as long as it makes you
happy, no harm is done, but don't expect a benefit to be gained either.
But if you move from NSUD to airport deuces, well then IMO you are
being just plain silly. Moving to a game that returns less because you
think your machine is cold is definitely a losing strategy.

I am happy that more people responded to my post. I was just curious
how other people make the choice to stay at a machine, move or quit

other people do. I usually stay for 2 days at time and live about 3
hours away from Reno. I play for the fun of it, and coming from a
little foothill town, Reno is like a different planet.

So that's the secret! Thanks for the heads-up, Stu!
I've been carrying an extra pair of underpants to change my luck.
Extra socks will be more convenient.
BTW, to all you APs out there who are following this thread, if you
decide to stay with spare underpants instead of spare socks, I don't
advise turning them inside out! {(O:

I know all the mathematical answers to your question, however, I will
say; for as long as I have been playing (over 10 years) - I have not
once had success in playing a machine after I hit a royal on it. I
do not know why but I will just lose, lose, lose on it. I finally
accepted that and I move on.

I don't particular enjoy looking at a video screen and hitting buttons
at 700 hands per hour. I play to fufill my action requirement, hustle a
promotions, etc, etc. That said, it is important to remember that
video poker (in the current environment) is a game that generally
returns less than 100% and the royal flush accounts for about 2% of the
return meaning you ought to expect losing sessions most of the time.
All a big hit means is you can play longer without dipping into your
pocket. What I do is to take pictures for bragging rights.
