vp pro's view

John Kelly did a good job of summarizing what it takes to make money playing VP in Vegas. And I will say that it IS getting harder - and I don't expect our profits to average as high in the coming years as they have in the past.

<<If you are saying that you (and hubby) average $50,000 a year income (last
six years) from playing $1+ video poker games for twenty hours a week and
not had a single losing year, WOW!>>

I did not say $50,000 - I said "mid 5-figure RANGE." I deliberately am being non-specific here!!

<<If you could figure out a way to "market" the how and where of these amazing opportunities, IMHO, you could make hundreds of thousands of dollars from this venture.>>

All the techniques Brad and I use are in my two books. Wish I could make hundreds of thousands of dollars selling those!! But few people have the necessary requisites: a huge bankroll, extremely good organizational skills, intense motivation, the utmost discipline, and the ability to go through God-awful losing streaks and not lose the faith!

You have to work awfully hard to earn such easy money. (To rephrase a Dancer concept)

You are being kind. Since casino revenue is a finite amount, I
wonder if sending out money in one form (local mailing) leaves less
money to send out in other forms (good plays). The casinos are in
control, they control the amount in their mailing, and they control
the value of good plays.

But if John or Jean don't go pick up the offer and play, there may be
less for we infrequent patrons as they eagerly await our next
lucrative sojourn. Even the slight loss experienced brings good cash
flow to keep the doors swinging open as the Bellman hauls our Louis
Voutton ensemble up to the luxus suite, high overlooks the Strip. CD

This is indeed the trend, methinks (actually, I've been babbling about it and predicting it for years). Worse plays, better mailings. The drivers of this are:

1)Protection from pros. Removing the better games limits the damage pros can do to the casino's bottom line. While there is still money to be made, an advantage player can only play until he reaches to level necessary for the best mailing; then he needs to move on. This helps casino managers sleep at night.

2)It WORKS. The general public is generally clueless about pay-schedules, but even the most math-challenged chump can deduce that showing up to a casino where $50 in freeplay awaits is better than going to a casino where nothing awaits. Indeed, it's even more persuasive than that: free money will get players THAT DIDN'T EVEN PLAN ON PLAYING that day into the casino.

The gist of this applies to visitors as well - low rollers didn't USED to free-room/food/cash invites to megaresorts!

Been a good info day. We now know full VP Pros are mid 2 figures ...
25, and The Queen makes mid 5 figures annual, $25,000. We also
learned that when Brad hit for 20K on Dec 13, or 80 % of annual VP
income, "We hugged and kissed" but just a fleet passing in a life of
variable expectations. The loving couple then redepart on separate
pirogues thru the cypress swamp of VP life. So them'sre Pros.

On OUR amature trip over XMAS week, we hit two $4K RFs at Tahoe
Harrahs which only drew passing of 10% partner $400 exchanges plus
the std. simi-pro hug and kiss. Early 1 Jan ,tho, 12:15 exact, Dorly
left the nest and sprung a $10,293 duble luky slot prog. We waited
until the pile of Ben's were applied to her palm, submitted to Silver
Legacy Reno pub pics of large check stretched twixt us, then raced
upstairs to each have $5146.50 mad passionate sex to begin OUR VP

gone babe! Aint so Crazy Don.

Well, old Rastis is not the sharpest knife in the drawer but his 4th grade
math tells him that $1,500 a month amounts to $18,000 a year. Ms. Scott
made it clear that she was not including comps and other freebies in her
calculations (that amounts to another $20,000 in booty). Mr. Kelly did not
say how many hours he played a week to make $18,000 a year. Ms. Scott
stated that she (and husband) played a total of 20 hours per week. I don't
consider $18,000 to be in the mid five figure range. Maybe it's just me but
I think of the mid range of five figures to be more like $50,000. If you
were to triple $18,000 and work "as a full time pro" that figure would
become to $54,000, which I would consider the mid range of a five figure
income. My question then would be, is that $54,000 being earned by working
only 20 hours a week as a full time pro? If that is the case, do you have
to work awfully hard to earn such easy money? Twenty hours amounts to half
of an average work week in the U.S. BTW, Rastis is really not such a hard
sell but he does let facts and logic influence his reasoning, which can be a
problem at times.

We've been down this path before, but one more time:
the "secret" is Las Vegas LOCAL'S MAILINGS.
My wife and I average about $1500/month in freeplay/bounceback mailings,
and we don't play nearly as much as Brad and Jean, nor do we play at
such high denominations. I don't doubt that a full-time pro, who
includes Laughlin in his circuit, could triple that (or more). Add in
cashback, promos, drawings, free tournaments, free gas, free groceries,
free clothing, free food, free entertainment, and there you are. See
Jean's excellent "Frugal II" for details [note to Jean: VPV isn't going
to be an easy sale, but I gave it a shot :^)].

Over the years, many have expressed doubts that VP pros exist. None of
the doubters live in Las Vegas.

My friend is not as ecstatic today as he was yesterday. He did want me to
ask the 2,823 members of vpFREE if any other player (pro or amateur) has
been able to average "the mid 5-figure RANGE", playing video poker an
average of 20 hours a week for the last six years. My friend is skeptical
by nature and would like to hear from more players who have made similar
money, playing only twenty hours a week, before he jumps in with both feet.
Rastis is certainly no math wiz but "me thinks" the midrange of a 5 figure
income ($10,000 to $99,999) would be in the "neighborhood" of $50,000.
Perhaps a math wiz could calculate the median or mid point of the two
extreme points of a five figure income. Neither Rastis nor his friend has
any doubts about Ms. Scott's figures (income) but wonders if this result is
the norm or a statistical anomaly. Ra$ti$

spell live rich on moderate means." We certainly have averaged above
$15,000 since 1997, high as $25K low as $12K. However it's not profit
but rather defrayed expense to a very high lifestyle over as many as
10 periods of 2 to 10 days a year. We LIKE living in San Antonio

eats available in the realms lower than heaven, we laugh and get back
to some long hours slaving over hot RNGs. Time enough to rest in the

Agreed on all accounts (sorry, couldn't resist).

   Mr. Kelly did not

say how many hours he played a week to make $18,000 a year.

About 12 hrs/week for me, about 8 hrs/week total, 20 hours a week total. Also, to repeat: this figure ($18,000) does not include cashback, promos, drawings, free tournaments (which are cash of sorts), free gas, free groceries, free clothing, free food, free entertainment.

If you factor all of these in, we currently earn about $30/hour. Not quite as much as we do at our day jobs, but not bad for fun-n-games. On the other hand:

1. I'm only playing the best plays. If I played more, I'd being playing lesser plays and my hourly wage would decrease.

2. 12 hours/week is all I would really want to play. It's fun, but it can get boring, frustrating, even depressing. My worst days at work don't put me in as sour of a mood as does a miserable losing streak. (Of course, my best days at VP are quite a bit better than my best days at work!)

3. No health benefits, retirement, sense-of-accomplishment, etc. made in this "job". Smokey, noisy work environment. No job security either; all advantage plays could disappear on the whim of casino management (although I doubt they will). Salary is not guaranteed: if you're unlucky, you lose, period.

Anyway, we digress. My point is/was: local advantage players can make a lot more than $7/hour.

Well, John, you are very convincing but my friend says that he is going to
keep his $116,000 a year "profession" (with good insurance, a take home car
and a great pension plan). He will join with Rastis and settle for making $7
an hour, plus his cash back, comps, gas, RFB and clothing which we get on
our half dozen or so trips to Vegas each year.(Friend says that he will
re-consider his options again, in 4 years & 355 days when he can retire with
an 80% lifetime pension (high 3 year salary/annual cost of living raises).
Not bad for a guy who is even more dim witted than Rastis!

BTW, Rastis makes $30+ an hour officiating high school basketball and
volleyball during the year. (Rastis also has a day job which pays his bills
and supports his bad habits) Now I guess, one could say that Rastis is a
professional referee since he is a sole proprietor (for IRS purposes) and
has to file tax returns for this "business" income (which is really a
hobby). So Rastis prefers to say he has a "hobby" that makes him a little
coin. On the other hand, Rastis believes there are some "professional"
referees running up and down the court, blowing their whistles, just like he
does. For example, Bob Delaney (former NJ state trooper) makes $250,000+ a
year working as an NBA referee. "Me thinks" that Bob is a "professional"
referee. Rastis feels the same way about professional gamblers. He has met
a few, including World Poker tour "professional T.J Cloutier who lives in
the Dallas area. But somehow, Rastis just can't bring himself to think of
video players who earn $30 an hour plus .25% cashback (or less), promos,
drawings, free gas, free groceries, free clothing, free food, free
entertainment as "professionals" simply because they pocket a few bucks
from participating in a hobby. So, John, you can have the last word, since
Rastis now has the tired head. Nasty Rasti is going to recuse his dumb old
self from any further discussion concerning big time VP "pros" living high
off the hog, wearing their spiffy casino supplied clothing while "couponing"
