VP Programs able to do Kings or Better or Pair of Aces?

Hi everyone,

Love the group! I was wondering if any of the Video Poker programs
available (e.g., WinPoker, Frugal Video Poker, etc.) are able to
calculate expected return (ER) for games that differ from the norm in
what they offer as the minimum paying hand?

I wanted to find the ER for some of the games that are on the IGT
Multi Game machines here in Louisiana bars/restaurants that have Pair
of Aces as the minimum paying hand on Joker Poker and have Kings or
Better for some of the Bonus games.

The software that I've seen so far is unable to change the bottom
paying hand from the standard Kings or Better on Joker Poker. I *do*
know that these games likely have a very low ER, but I'm trying to set
up an Excel spreadsheet with all of the games that I've seen around
here to get some data set up. =)

Thanks,

- Aaron.

You may find the information you are looking for on 5 card's listing
of pay tables which is located here:

http://videopoker.fws1.com/custom.html

He lists Joker Poker with a pair of aces as the minimum hand as
having an expected return of 93.78% (assuming the rest of the pay
table agrees with what you are considering playing)

I have found this site to have a tremendous amount of information on
the different pay tables which are available.

I didn't bother looking at my Frugal Video Poker software before I
wrote my previous reply.

It looks like it is quite easy to change the paytable to suit your
needs.

Click on "Machines" in the menu and then choose "Change Payoff
Tables".

In the new window that opens, choose the minimum high pair required
from the drop down menu which is titled (appropriately enough) "High
Pair". Then click "Analyze" and it will come back with the table.

Just for the heck of it, I changed the Double Double Bonus table
which has a five credit return of 98.98% using a pair of jacks or
better as the high pair and changed it to a pair of kings or better
and the return tanked to 90.49%.

Both Winpoker and Frugal VP are able to accomodate this analysis.

In the case of Joker Poker, K+, A+, and 2 Pair+ are all standard games
within both programs, so analysis simply entails loading the
appropriate program and modifying the paytable as necessary.

For Jacks or Better type games (including Bonus), both programs also
accomodate the redefinition of the lowest paying pair. Steve has
discussed the steps necessary in Frugal.

The process in Winpoker takes a modest amount of effort. It's
necessary to set up the desired game using the Games/Define menu
option. In that set up, you can reset the lowest paying hand.
Frankly, the Winpoker games definition process isn't the most
intuitive task I've ever encountered and I've stumbled more than once
in defining a game, but it's hardly rocket science.

not to worry...LA is a 100% jurisdiction for riverboat casinos, and
something really evil, like 96%, for truck stop casinos. The payout
limitations are statutory.
