VP in the Pacific Northwest in general

As other posters have noted, VP in Washington is a fraud; the VP
machines are actually non-random Video Lottery Terminals. In Idaho,
the casinos don't have VP at all. In Oregon, the Indian casinos do
have VP, but it's laughingly bad (and I've checked at Cow Creek,
Spirit Mountain, and Lincoln City, as well as the ones near Pendleton
and on Hwy 97 east of Crater Lake). For instance: 6/5 JOB. The
schedules all seem to be at 96-97%. In Montana, there are VP machines
with bizarre schedules that all return....92%.

I love the Pacific Northwest, and it's heaven on earth in the summer,
but the best VP play is to hop a plane in Seattle or Portland and fly
to Nevada.

P.S. Forget Canada; Vancouver/Victoria have small casinos with table
games only. Calgary has Vegas-style slots, but no decent VP.

As I noted earlier, I agree with you. I've been to many casinos in
WA (at least 10), OR (5), and ID (2). The only possible exception I
know of is the casino in Chewelah (65 miles north of Seattle) which
had an old-style quarter 5-coin 9/6 progressive bank, and loads of
old coin slots, on my last visit in July 2002. Has anyone been there
recently? If not, I'll visit in July or August and report what I
find.

I guess the nearest location to youngstown would be Mountaineer in
Chester, WV but the vp there is horrible.

The nearest playable locations would be Detroit or Niagara Falls.

Check the database.

If I get an uncontrollable urge to play video poker before my next trip to Nevada, I'll drive over and check this place out. BTW, it's called the Double Eagle Casino. I can attest to the fact that Washington is a video poker wasteland and yet they keep building new casinos.

According to Mapquest, you are about 176 miles from Salamanca, NY
where the Seneca Tribe of Indians has just opened their second
casino - Seneca Allegany. For their first location in Niagara Falls,
the VP is listed on vpFree in the "Eastern USA section. Here:

  http://members.cox.net/vpfree/E_SeNi.htm

It might be safe to assume that there would be a similar selection
in Salamanca. This is a temporary casino that opened a few weeks
ago. They are supposed to be building a major resort at a nearby
site.

There is also VP at the Slots at Fort Erie Racetrack in Fort Erie,
Ontario. That's about another 20 miles. They had full-pay Pick'em
at the $5 level when I was there last July. Caution: Don't confuse
this place with the Hamburg (NY) racetrack. The machines there are
all VLTs! as are the machines at the Indian gaming sites other than
Seneca Niagara and Seneca Allegany.

And if you want to continue another 20 miles along the Niagara River
you come to Casino Niagara and soon the Niagara Fallsview casino.

Hope this helps.

Um, Chewelah is on the other side of the state from Seattle. I live almost
exactly 65 miles north of Seattle. There's two casinos up here, both of them
tribal casinos. The Skagit and the Swinomish. Only the Skagit offers VP and I
wouldn't play them if my life depended on it. Perhaps you are thinking of
Spokane?

You are so so right! I meant to say 65 miles north of Spokane ... in
the town of Chewelah. I've been to the Skagit casino and, as you
said, terrible VP.

Yep, Chewelah 65 mi north of SPOKANE, up Hwy 395.
Never been myself.

Before I "got into" VP, I visited Mill Bay casino, about 6 mi. north
and west of Chelan, Washington out Hwy 150. I played some sort of
simple .25 vp on uprights there. I don't remember any of the match
card business, so, there is a chance that these were also "smuggled-
in", pre-compact machines that might NOT be class II VLTs. Might be
worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood, and certainly worth a
comment if anyone has been there recently.

Yes
Mill Bay Casino did have the real video poker and slots with coins, not tickets. But they just got taken away by the feds two months ago. Previously they did have 8/5 jacks or better with a progressive, and some 9/6 with a progressive.

Why would the feds take away those machines? I'm not questioning
what you said ... I'm wondering why they would do it. What it
amounts to is ... OK, you can have VP, but not real VP. Might it
have something to do with pressure from Nevada's politicians, at the
federal level? Mill Bay and Chewelah have had regular Nevada style
VP for years ... and suddenly it's illegal and must be confiscated.
Very odd.

I'm not privvy to the tribal Compact this tribe has with Washington state, but it's an
easy bet that Class III VP is not allowed in Wash state.
If this is tribal land, it surprised me too to hear the "Feds" would come onto this land
and confiscate machines. A bigger tribe in another state (NY or New Mexico for
example) and you'd have a gunfight or at least a standoff.
I doubt Nevada gives a rat about 20 machines in a little town in the middle of
nowhere - no competition for gaming dollars there.
It's not "suddenly illegal." In fact, again, I'm no lawyer, but I seem to recall it's only
illegal to TRANSPORT such machines, not to own or operate them. They probably got
trucked into town in the middle of the night many years ago.
I don't know any particulars of this case of course, but I think they could fight the
confiscation!
Oh well, I have enough battles of my own...

There is so much criticism of tribal gaming, and rightly so, but is
it the fault of the tribes? Instead it appears the problem
is the state/federal regulation they operate under. Those rules
put them at a distinct disadvantage with Nevada's casinos. Is that
just a coincidence?

Mill Creek and Chewelah are definitely "in the middle of nowhere".
But Washington has dozens of casinos, most of them near the major
population centers. I think Nevada is very concerned about this
competition, and in Oregon and California too.

It may be the courts justified confiscating those machines because
they were "transported illegally" ... but the bottom line is they
wanted them gone and went to great expense and effort to get them
out. If I were a Federal Marshall leading that group I would be
ashamed of myself. The Mill Creek and Chewelah tribes, both located
in the middle of nowhere, have been getting dumped on for decades,
and evidently it hasn't stopped.
