Any suggestions for a couple of video poker lovers who will be in the
immediate downtown St Louis area?

If you confine your play to only downtown, then you have two choices.
President casino in StL downtown which had some decent games last I
checked about 9 months ago, but it is a dump and not the safest place
late at night. One problem some people have in Missouri is the $500
per 2 hour 'buy in' limit. Since everyone makes at least $250 per
hour in Missouri our state government has determined that we cant
loose more than $500 every 2 hours, and that way we have absolutely no
problem gamblers (ha ha !!)
Then there is the Casino Queen, a Boyd property I believe.
It just opened a brand new facility about a month ago, it is very nice
and is known for the loosest slots in the country, also quite a few
playable choices for VP. Also since it is in E. StL, IL there is no
'buy in' problem (if that is a problem for you)
It is just across the river from downtown StL
Personally, I dont play at either one. I play at Harrahs, which is
about 25-30 min west of downtown. A very nice facility with tons of
terrible games and just a few scattered playable games thrown in.
