I play poker for a living and soon I'll be moving to TX. I'm
interested in making money at vp, but when I checked the best games
here on the site it doesn't seem possible (i.e. low stakes games
with small edges at best). Is that because the pay schedules of the
higher limit games are poor in Louisiana, or because these pay
schedules just aren't listed on this site? My main question is to
determine if it is worth the time to learn to play vp at an expert
level when I will only be playing in LA. I can play in the North or
South because my in-laws live in the central part of the state where
I'm sure we'll be visiting often after we move. I don't mind doing
some scouting, but I was planning on learning to play before I moved
so I hope someone can give me an idea as to whether this would be
worthwhile. I was hoping for something like a 0.4% edge (including
cash back) on a 5 coin $5 machine. At 500 hands per hour that would
be $50/hour. Or is that a pipedream. I could play with a lower
edge for a while if there was an opportunity to move up to $25 vp
later and make $50 - $100 per hour. Your reply is appreciated.

I don't know of any good high limit VP opportunities in Louisiana.
This doesn't mean that they absolutely don't exist, but I've never
heard of any. There are a few casinos where a VP player can play a
more or less break-even game on something like NSUD + a small amount
of same day cash back and make some money from the mailers, but to be
worthwhile this approach demands that you make weekly trips to cash
in your coupons. And it certainly won't provide anywhere near the
hourly income that you would like. Plus, as another poster
mentioned, you would run into problems with state taxes. To make
matters worse, in most states you could deduct the income tax paid to
Louisiana directly off your own state tax liability. But since Texas
has no state income tax, you wouldn't even get this benifit.
I know that a number of Louisiana casinos have poker rooms. Since
you are a poker player, I would recommend that you look at
opportunities in this area instead of VP. Or you could even combine
the two. Play just enough VP at a near break-even level to get some
room and food comps, then play live poker to make your "real" money.

I can't comment on all of LA, but Shreveport seem to me to be outside of
your stated playing conditions. The highest denomination VP game that is
available would be at the Down's Racsino, that is even close to playable.
They have one $20 coin; single line; multigame machine that offers JB (9/6)
and NSU Deuces as do the two $5 multigames beside them. They are in the High
Limit room. Haven't checked out the other games on these machines in depth.
The Donw's still has some other JB (9/6) games, some in 3/5 play and $1
single line, at least they did the last time I was there in '05. They have a
Total Reward level that is higher than the Diamond which might get you an
extra tidbit in ER, but what that is ( and if it even exist) I don't know! I
just played for a guy once, that said he had a black card that was one level
up. Got him a $5 Straight Flush for his trouble. It's just that Harrah's
regular cash back is Bounce back crap and at .02%, it won't get you where
you want to be. One of the biggest flaws to us is there is no hotel
attached, yet? Sure they will give you free rooms at the Horseshoe or at
partner hotels, but that is to much driving or shuttle busses for us.
Sam's is out!, pretty much a wasteland, at least for you! They do offer
double cash back everyday for there Elite Card level, but nothing to play
except Pick-Em $.25 single line, very slow!! As mentioned by some others,
they also have a few progressive, ($.25 and $.50)... just not a fan of
these, especially at these denom!
Boomtown, don't think so! Although they have some of the best $.25 VP, I
don't know what their top level player club card pays and the regular level
is .25%. The 4 3/5 play games that I frequent have SA 3 play @ 99.97% and JB
(9/6){99.5%} 3/5 play as well as NSU Deuces {99.7%}.
Hollywood, would ( in my opinion) be a possible and your best bet, unless
something changes or you can get in a higher level of cash back with
Harrah's ( black card??).
First, the Celebrity Level player club cash back is .00375 ( $7.50 for every
100 pt. $20 of play equals one pt.), but they only have one game to
play...Super Ace Bonus @ 99.9%. They have two 10 play multigames and the
only full pay game available in the whole casino. It is also in the 3/5
plays. Now, if you like the Progressives? There is a Double Bonus Poker
progressive that I have seen up in the $9000 range. Don't what the meter is
set at. If you can play the $25 level budget wise, then the $12.50 per hand
ten play won't bury to quickly. The volatility is a killer at 63. I was told
$16000 to $20000 was a good budget for this ten play game.
We like the Casino, less smokey and free room are plentiful. The Steakhouse
is good( like Sam's better 'cause we made friend there under Harrah's
ownership).
The Capri?? Ha! not even a consideration!
Conclusion: My best guess would be, Shreveport is not the place!

Remember, you can get a refund of a large portion of the LA State Tax by
filing a State Tax return! At least we have so far!
