I post in here rarely (my last was about VP in Buenos Aires), but I
just have to share this accounting of my trip this week to Vegas.
(Full disclosure: I also went to Vegas March 26-29, stayed at
Main Street Station and lost my ass ($900 - I'm mainly a quarters
player), but that doesn't make for a very interesting post.)
I flew in Sunday around noon, this time taking advantage of $50
in free slot play and a free room at Sunset Station. I like the place
and its VP offerings, but I kinda miss not having easy access to
downtown or the Strip.
Anyway, I started out playing the Optimums near the center of the
casino. Lost several hundred quickly playing the 10-6 DDB at
25-cent level. Moved on to my old standby, the quarter 9-6 DDB
machines with 1,199 royal near the Sportsbook bar. Started
poorly, going down over 500 into my starting bankroll, from 990
on arrival to maybe 475 left. Then my luck improved when I got
aces w/kicker for 500. A mere 15 minutes later I got the royal,
keeping the J-10 of diamonds. So from 600 down, I was 1,100 in
the black. A happy camper. But that was just the beginning.
The remainder of Sunday I played mostly 50-cent 9-6 DDB
progressives near the main cashier. Managed to finish the night
still up 1,000.
Monday started well when I hit a 50-cent royal on the Optimums
near the poker room. Later Monday the 50-cent progressives by
the cashier finally rewarded me - a $2,136 royal.
Wrapped up Monday's play up about $3,500 for the trip. I figured
the final day, Tuesday, would be my chance to give a big chunk of
that back. Wrong!
Tuesday I'd be playing dollars only. I jumped around between the
optimums and the 6 or 7 DDB slant tops in what used to be the
high-limit area, between the table games and the cashier.
Around noon I scored aces w/kicker again for another $2000
W2G. And I was hitting other kicker hands too.
By late afternoon, I was giving back a handful of C-notes. But
then one of the Optimum's by the Wheel of Fortune slots in the
center of the casino rewarded my with a $4,000 royal in hearts.
Um, I think my royal results were slightly off the charts. Not to
mention the several aces/kicker hands. But it worked out to 4
royals in just about 40 hours of play (pretty hard-core for a
three-day trip, I know).
By the time I took the shuttle to the airport at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, I
couldn't fit the bills in my wallet. I was up $9,400 for the trip. Not
bad for a quarter player with a budget of $800-1,500 a trip.
So, let this story be a beacon of hope for anybody currently on a
losing streak ....
