"How can any fair to goodVP player even hope to have a few thousand
in the black at the end of the year??"
Video Poker has a VERY small profit margin (if any) over the long
term. Even if you put one million through with a .25% edge, the
theoretical profit is only $2500. You either have to be very lucky
or play for large amounts (and thus risk large amounts).
I agree.
I also think there are two mistakes players can make. And I have been
guilty of both. But I'm getting better.
The two mistakes center around proper bankrolling.
The first error is to "back off" after a losing session. EX: You are
playing $1 VP and lose $1500. You feel unlucky and reduce your play
to 25c denom, THEN hit your royal. But the net result is a $500 loss.
Or perhaps you "economized" and played at less than 5 coins per bet.
Sound familiar? We all know better.
To avoid Mistake #1, you apportion in advance all your session play
according to what you can afford. And even if you lose, you play max
coins at the same level next time since in the long run it could show
a better result. Eventually.
Mistake #2 is the reverse. You hit a 25c royal and can't wait
to play again since you have money to spare. But you are
overconfident and increase denomination. And the $1000 royal you hit
is quickly depleted at the $1 level. Once again, you were lucky
enough to get a royal but have little or nothing to show for it.
So, yes, I can see how over 20 royals can quickly disappear. Or
perhaps they were squandered on slots which have no strategy. At
least I'm not guilty of that mistake since I don't play slots.
Perhaps the key is to always remember that once you are paid you
really aren't playing with the casino's money anymore.
It's yours.
