Since you mentioned viruses. I thought I should mention that I use Ubuntu Linux on all my computers and enjoy virus immunity. I am still able to use all the VP software out there.

If anyone is having virus issues please drop me a line and I'd be happy to free you from the yoke of Microsoft.

Note: Ubuntu is not Windows. It is different, and by "different" we mean, easier, faster, more reliable, virus immune, and free.

Been using Ubuntu for about four years now. I love it. On most of my computers I have both systems as I still need Windows for a few applications that I cannot do without. It is easy to install both systems and "dual boot". And I'm not even a computer nerd. One program I still use Windows for is Bob Dancer's VPW. But WinPoker works on Ubuntu with WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator). I can also play at Poker Stars with WINE.

I have also enjoyed Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu but different in its own way. It's quite popular.

Again I say, I am not even a geek, but I have read that people have left a computer running for over a year with Linux/Ubuntu and not had to reboot. Try doing that with Windows!

Windows in Linux. Dual BOOT is good but if you want to avoid having to switch between OS by rebooting there's a better way.

The easier and better way to have Windows coexisting with Ubuntu is to run Windows in VirtualBox or VMWare inside Linux. It's flawless. If you would like instructions let me know?

It's rare that I even use Windows, but yes, it's a bit of an inconvenience to reboot. Sure, Frank, you could give me a link, or I could look this up myself. I want to SEE Video Poker for Winners work in this "virtual box" thingy you're talking about. I'll believe it when I see it. lol

By the way, when I use WinPoker with WINE, it works, but not flawlessly, and the high speed simulation is not as fast as on a Windows system.

How good are the antivirus softwares that see offered free of charge online ?

I've had better results with the free AVG anti-virus than
with any of the paid ones.

Fair? For paid software Kaspersky is considered the best:
http://usa.kaspersky.com/store/kaspersky-store

But I think you are missing the point. Linux does everything that Windows does and more, and is IMMUNE to viruses.

Why would you pay to be resistant, when you can be immune for free?

Also depending on your system running anti-virus software can take as much as 40% off the speed of your system.

CORRECTION

Some have pointed out that all Linux is not 100% immune to viruses.

That is correct. Ubuntu is not generic Linux, it is Debian based. All software is stored in a single central repository.

Debian based Linux, requires the manual installation of any virus you decide you simply can't live without, of which only about 28 exist. You would have to

1. edit a file called your sources.list (sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)

2. Import the public key ( gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --search-keys viruses.com)

3. Type (sudo apt-get update)

4. Type (sudo apt-get install NAMEOFVIRUS)

5. Not to mention, typing in your password about 3 times.

It is possible to turn off some of this security. But note: it is enabled by default.

In summary.

Preventing Viruses in Windows requires adding virus protection.

Getting viruses in Linux requires turning off built-in security.

Not technically immune, but a nods as good as a wink to a blind bat.

I use free Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Ad Aware. They work just fine but I don't go to weird places on the internet. If anything try's to change my registry Spybot jumps up and tells me. The drawback is you don't get automatic updates. You have to do them yourself.

I use the same stuff but in addition, I loaded the Yahoo toolbar in Firefox because it has the CA Yahoo Anti-spy application. I've found it to be incredibly fast at checking for malware and it seems to find stuff the other ones don't. The only time I let the Yahoo toolbar show is when I want to use the anti-spy application.

This man knows his software. My old company Computer Repair Specialists used exactly this software suite to clean viruses from contaminated systems.

You should all know, we had to drop using Spybot because of issues we had with it. Registry damage and conflicts with other software.

I have not had to think about viruses in 2 years since switching to Linux, so I had forgotten those. Thanks for reminding me.

Note: There are two free virus scanning programs for Linux. Of course they scan for Windows viruses. They are used to avoid infecting your friend's Windows systems. I stopped using them because I simply converted all my friends to Ubuntu.
