video poker tourneys

sorry if someone has asked this before....

i never really thought i would get in a tournament and now i'm signed
up for one is july.

Does strategy alter for tournament play? If this answer is someone in
print(web) just let me know.

If your tournament is short in duration, as most are, skill becomes
secondary to good fortune.

These tournaments are won by getting royals and lots of four of a
kinds. Forget perfect strategy and go for four of a kinds and royals.

For example:

1. Do not hold two pair. If your tournament is DDB hold pairs that
could result in premium four of a kinds (A,2,3,4).

2. Hold only one high card when dealt two unsuited high cards.

3. Once you are assigned a machine, if a blue haired little old lady
sits down beside you and asks, "Sonny, do you know what these buttons
are for", go ahead and kick her stool out from under her as these are
the people who usually win these things.

i loved don's answer. i'm kinda excited about the tournament. i've done
slot tournaments before but since i'm primarily a vp player so i'm looking
forward to this. i just wondered if someone would use a royal strategy
more so than the normal perfect strategy. don seemed to think so with the
addition of going for 4 of a kinds. it'll be fun no matter what. as long
as i'm in vegas i'm happy

difficult to win a vp tournament w/o catching at least one RF.
Therefore, it's necessary to put long term strategy aside (which can

Every vp tournament in which I've played, has utilized 9/6JOB. With
that game I also adjust for 3SF holds as well as quads. If the
tournament was played on any bonus game, I would also adjust further

Funny and accurate answer! I would just add the following.

The first thing to do is estimate what score is needed to win or be
among the cash winners. I use the following rules of thumb: a royal
every 40,000 hands and a quad every 400 hands. Esimate the number of
hands played in the tournament. If everyone plays a set number of
hands, your work is done. If it is a timed tournament, I would use a
conservative (600hph for a timed tournament this should be
conservative) and and an aggressive (1200hph). So If there are 300
players with one fifteen minute round the number hands range from
45,000 to 90,000 hence a royal will most likely be needed to win,
but, quads should be enough for lesser cash prizes. With a shorter
session time a royal might not even be needed to win, hence, adjust
your strategy accordingly.

Format also matters. I have played in tournaments where the winner in
each round of 20 players advances to the final cash round. Here a
royal is rarely needed to advance just a quad and fast play, if
timed. On timed tournaments fast play is key. If you have 20 players
and a ten minute round you could estimate between 2,000 and 4,000
hands played, hence 10-20 quads, most people in the tournaments where
I played, played rather slow, somes even smoke cigaretts while
playing, further reducing hands played...fast play and a lucky quad
will often win the round!
